These are the best music albums of 2019

What are the best music albums of 2019 according to our editors?

The year 2019 served us not only with great hits, but also with great albums. Some "newbies" on the music scene, such as Billie Eilish, released their first albums, we also got new albums from well-known singers, such as Solange and Lana del Rey, and with all creators it is possible to see more mixing or combining of different genres. This is our pick of some of the best.

The best music albums of 2019

Lana del Rey, Norman Fucking Rockwell!

This is Lana's sixth album, which was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Album. The songs are influenced by the classic rock of the 70s of the last century, and thematically they are mostly songs about complicated love relationships that completely take you over, and songs about the Californian way of life.

FKA Twigs, Magdalene

FKA Twigs is back after a difficult breakup and a difficult operation with a new album, a song cycle about resetting boundaries and rebuilding trust. The album is the singer's personal confession, but at the same time it can serve as support for others who find themselves in a similar situation. Electronic sounds can be heard mixing with the piano, and the singer is joined by other singers such as Nico Jaar.

Billie Eilish, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

The first album of the barely 17-year-old singer, which impressed everyone and earned Billie a Grammy nomination for best album. She captivated us with her soft and whispering voice and a melody that seems mysterious and exciting. Using different rhythms and influences, the singer redefined pop music.

Vampire Weekend, Father of The Bride

The continuation of the Modern Vampires of the City album by the indie rock band, for which we have been waiting for six years. The album is interspersed with new sounds and ideas with influences from country music and jam bands from the 60s, but we can also hear elements of R&B, soul, rock, art pop and other genres. The songs deal with themes such as lost youth, the decline of romance, political strife and uncertainty.

Ariana Grande, Thank U, Next

The album was created after the death of the singer's ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and after the break-up with her fiance Pete Davidson. It combines pop, R&B and trap rhythms with hip hop influences. Flirty and lighthearted songs can be read as a pep talk for all girls who suffer from a broken heart and may not know how to move forward.

Harry Styles, Fine Line

A completely fresh album from the former member of One Direction, which became an instant hit and with which Harry can also be seen as a modern David Bowie. The style of the song is a mix of pop and rock with a touch of prog pop, psychedelic pop, indie pop and soul.

Solange, When I Get Home

This is the singer's fourth album, which is dedicated to her hometown - Houston, Texas. Again, it's a mix of genres like jazz, pop, soul, hip hop and dance. The album has also been described as an ode to the Houston hip hop scene, which is professed by different types of black women from the Third Ward, where the singer grew up. Stevie Wonder's album The Secret Life of Plants was also an important inspiration.

Tyler, the Creator, Igor

The rapper's fifth album tells the story of a love triangle between him, a guy he's dating, and that guy's ex-girlfriend, who's trying to get him back. The album is anchored by American comedian Jerrod Carmichael, who explains the mood of Tyler and the title character Igor. The music is a mix of R&B, funk and hip hop.

Angel Olsen, All Mirrors

Another album about relationships and breakups that doesn't romanticize them. The singer's reflections on her past loves that made her feel less worthy and how she let it happen are expressed, concluding with the realization that their ending was a positive thing.

Taylor Swift, Lover

After her previous dark album Reputation, Taylor returned with a positive energy with influences of synth pop. With 18 songs, it is Taylor's longest album, expressing the singer's emotional maturity and openness, and is, in her own words, a love letter to love.
