Samsung surprised again with its new series of smart devices, including new flip phones, earphones, watches - including the new Watch Ultra, and the highly anticipated Galaxy Ring. Among them, I was most impressed by the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6. Here is an overview of all the good and bad features of this phone.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 brings several small improvements that add up to significant changes. Although the Flip 5 and Flip 6 are almost identical on the outside, the key differences are on the inside. It's like comparing twins, with one winning the lottery for the best genes. The newer model has a more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 12GB of RAM (instead of 8GB) – because who needs just 8GB these days, a larger 4000mAh battery (up from 3700mAh) and an internal display that reaches brightness up to 2600 nits, so bright you could probably roast marshmallows on it. The new 50 MP main camera allows for better photos, while the ultra-wide camera provides great landscape shots. AI features such as smart answer suggestion and portrait studio enhance the user experience. So now your phone will not only be smarter than you, but also help you look better in selfies.
Improved otherwise familiar design
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 represents a real design improvement compared to the previous model. Although the Flip 5 and Flip 6 are almost identical on the outside, the differences are in small details, such as color-coordinated bezels around the cameras and a matte finish instead of a glossy one. There are also new colors available: Blue, Yellow, Silver, Shadow and Mint, plus some Samsung exclusive options. The phone looks smarter from every angle, as if it was designed in a laboratory of elegance. The matte finish on the sides and the matching color of the camera rings with the phone's body add purity and elegance. An important innovation is also a less noticeable bend on the inner screen and a new screen layer that is more resistant to shocks and scratches. The coating that reduces fingerprints is especially welcome. So while your phone still won't be immune to the forces of gravity, at least it won't look like textbook fingerprint forensics. Instead, your Z Flip 6 will always look like new, even if you touch it with greasy pizza hands.
The best improvements are not only in the design, but also in the interior. The phone is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with a vapor chamber that efficiently dissipates heat to keep the chip fast and the phone cool as a squeegee. So, your phone will be able to work faster than you on your morning coffee. In addition, it also has improved speakers, 12 GB of RAM (instead of last year's 8 GB), a larger battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh (instead of 3700 mAh) and an internal display that reaches a brightness of up to 2600 nits (previously 1750 nits). In other words, your new phone will be able to compete with the sun on the beach – at least in screen brightness. So if you ever forget your sunglasses, just close your Z Flip6.
Cameras: The phone got close to the flagships – and Samsung listened to the experts
The ultra-wide camera has been slightly upgraded with a larger sensor, while the main camera has seen a major upgrade - it's now 50MP, a big jump from the previous measly 12MP. Despite the lack of a separate zoom camera, zooming up to 10x is possible - digitally, of course, with the image still sharp - so to speak. There are also some new features, such as a camcorder mode where all the controls are moved to one side of the screen, but this feature doesn't seem particularly useful. Just very nostalgic. The cameras now also offer auto-zooming when taking pictures with the front screen - can be super useful for content creators, but the feature is a bit slow, at least after looking at some tests online, to be really useful. So, improvements to well-known Samsung features that have grown from unnecessary gimmicks to useful tools over the years.
AI Features - Smart navigation between Google & Microsoft
This time, Samsung especially focused on artificial intelligence (AI), which improves the user experience. One of the new features is to intelligently suggest replies to an incoming message, with the phone analyzing the last seven messages to understand the tone of the conversation. So, when the conversation is loaded on your external screen, you can reply practically automatically with "chatGPT", which should in most cases hit the "context" of your desired conversation. The feature still needs to be thoroughly tested to assess how well it captures the human tone, but we believe it will quickly learn from your archive of conversations with both the person and everyone in general, and be able to respond interestingly well with minimal input from you. Additionally, there is a Portrait Studio feature for photo editing, where AI transforms a person's face into a highly stylized image. While the feature is interesting, its usefulness seems limited. Just some "Korean" trick, but it still shows that in the future we may all get digital AI avatars that will communicate on our behalf. It might be great for creating new profile pictures that will be so unusual that you can calmly ignore all friend requests.
Compared to last year's Galaxy AI, which was not the best, the improvements are obvious. The new version offers better language support, improved microphones and AI noise reduction, which makes the live translation function work better and faster, which now also works on third-party apps like WhatsApp and the like. Simply put, now you can actually understand why she sends you so many hearts while chatting with your friend abroad. The matter will be interesting and indicates that soon we will all be communicating with phones, which will become only an interface between speakers. Thus, you will be able to go to a meeting with, for example, a Slovenian. He will speak his natural language and you will understand him in your language.
Switchable design - improved on a great base
Another important innovation is the lower weight (239 g) and the new titanium frame, which makes it only 7 g heavier than the non-switchable S24 Ultra. The phone is slimmer, with an open screen just 5.6mm thick (for comparison: the S24 Ultra is 8.6mm). The new design with rounded edges and a more compact hinge gives the impression that it is a normal smartphone. This means you can "fool" your friends into thinking you have a normal phone until you switch it over and show them what it can do. Basically, the phone really feels more refined in terms of design, even a bit more youthful than before.
My thoughts …
Although the improvements seem minor at first glance, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 brings some significant upgrades. Using the external screen more practical thanks to new widgets and increased brightness. Performance is also noticeably improved thanks to the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and vapor chamber, which means less overheating and better gaming performance. In fact, after looking at the specs, I believe you can play by far the most demanding games on it with absolutely no stuttering.
At least on paper, the cameras promise good photo quality, especially in low light conditions. The new 50MP main camera offers better detail and color, while the ultra-wide camera allows for great landscape shots. A sufficient combination to join the segment of premium phones in terms of capabilities. This is what most of us have been scolding so far and what we have been missing in him.
Samsung decided to make the price comparable to the flagship model, which is good news for potential buyers. Galaxy Z Flip 6 at a price of 1,199 euros for a model with 256 GB of storage space.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is definitely an improvement over previous models, both in design and functionality. With many improvements, especially in terms of camera, display and performance, this phone offers a lot for its price. AI features, while not yet perfect according to many, show great promise and add value to the user experience. Although the phone has some odd features like a camcorder mode, these do not detract from its overall appeal. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is definitely a phone that deserves your attention, especially if you're looking for something stylish and innovative. In any case, it can immediately claim the title of the most interesting phone in the world.
