Ah, it hasn't started well yet, but they are already threatening us. Well, we're exaggerating a bit. But surely, in addition to all the beautiful things that 2018 will bring us, there is also a list of dangers in one form or another. The American magazine Time put on its whistle and listed 10 potential threats to humanity in the year just started.
Which ones 10 things the most 'threatening' us in 2018:
1. The rise of China
For quite some time now, China has been mentioned as the successor of the USA in economic terms. The country with the largest population has developed the most advanced system of global exchange and investment strategies. And assuming primacy in the world market could further deepen the already established relations with the USA, which does not exactly bode well for the best scenario.
2. "Accidents" that lead to war
We haven't seen a major geopolitical crisis for quite some time, but the ground is ready in quite a few areas. The North Korea-US conflict, Syria and Russian-US relations may only take one wrong move to trigger far-reaching consequences.
3. Technological Cold War
China and the US will want to become the powerhouse of technological progress, and each wants to have as many female supporters as possible. We will see how other countries will react.
4. Mexico
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will greatly influence the fate of Mexico in 2018, as this year is an election year when Mexicans will choose a new president. Will they become economically independent or will they still be dependent on the US?
5. Tensions between the US and Iran
These tensions have been going on for quite a few years and it seems that there will be no end to them. The nuclear deal appears to be on shaky ground. Trump's support for Saudi Arabia and American meddling in the region do not show signs of easing.
6. Distrust in institutions
Public trust in governments, political parties, courts and media is falling all over the world, leading to chaos. Populism has taken a strong role and nothing good can come out of it.
7. New protectionism
Globalization is clearly facing new challenges and measures. In the market of the digital economy, the walls are ever higher and competition is unwelcome. Subsidies, duties and similar measures make free trade more difficult and strain relations.
8. British Troubles
Brexit has happened and must be accepted. We are now witnessing negotiations between England, the EU and the rest of the world, which will obviously last for quite some time. The volatility of such a big global 'player' can always be a threat to others as well.
9. Politics in South Asia
In Southeast Asia, they face religio-political instability. For quite some time, Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia have been rocked by political-religious upheavals, which from time to time even boil over into clashes that claim fatalities.
10. Security of Africa
Militarization and terrorism in South Sudan, Mali and Somalia also threaten other African countries (Nigeria, Kenya, etc.). States do not have enough resources to ensure security, and external actors who are supposed to help stabilize the situation will probably not be available indefinitely.
But all potential threats remain potential, as no one can predict them with certainty. Fingers crossed that they remain only possible.
