As the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, the fall closet organization project approaches. If you haven't organized your closet yet, now is the time to turn your attention to the warmer clothes you'll need for the colder days. All you need is a solid plan and the right storage solutions. Use these seven organization tips to help you tackle this project.
1. Start by emptying and cleaning your closets
Begin your organization project by first completely emptying your entire closet, including drawers. It will take some time, but your efforts will be rewarded. When the closet is empty, clean all the shelves, drawers, floor.
2. Assess your closet space
Now that your closets are clean from floor to top, assess the space. An empty closet allows you to see its interior in a much different way than when it is full. Consider which storage-related areas are giving you problems? Where do you lack space? Are you having a hard time finding items? Need more useful closet accessories? Make a list of things you would like to improve.
3. Sort everything
Even if you've decided you're ready to upgrade your closet space with accessories, you'll still have to deal with all the closet content you've emptied. On average, you only wear 20 % clothes in your closet, so it's just a matter of organizing them and getting rid of them. Don't be too sentimental when sorting your clothes. Get rid of the ones that are too small for you, you are tired of them or you haven't used them in years. It is necessary to accept this, because this way you will gain more space in the closet.
Sort the clothes into three different categories or piles:
- torn or worn clothes that are no longer in use and should be thrown away
- clothes and items that you can donate further
- clothes that you will still use and wear
4. Organize useful pieces of clothing
When you manage to get rid of the pile of used clothes and items, sort the remaining clothes according to color and season. Wash and store spring and summer clothes. If you have large wardrobes, you can store them back on the higher or lower shelves. If you do not have this option, of course store them in other rooms.
Use for storage storage boxes and bags. Boxes can be transparent so you can see what's inside. Or put stickers on them and write what you saved. Remember not to pack your clothes too tightly, as they need to breathe.
5. Sort autumn and winter clothes
You also need to organize all your fall and winter clothes. Reduce the amount of clothing, which you no longer wear. Make sure that the clothes you are going to keep are still in good condition and fit you well. Always place warmer pieces in the front or center so they are in your line of sight. This way, there will be no clutter in the search.
6. Fill your closets with warmer clothes
Autumn-winter clothes are more massive and will take up more space in your closets. Usually, the lower and upper spaces of the cupboards are always underutilized. Consider adding shelves, hanging rods, or boxes and hanging drawers for storage. This will give you extra space and make it easier to organize your clothes.
Sweaters, which are hung on hangers tend to stretch, so it is better to fold them and put them on shelves or in drawers. Then hang shirts and jackets on the rods. Coats and jackets, which you will wear several times, put them in the cupboards at the entrance or in some other room. Also, make sure you have gloves, scarves stored there.
Also make sure you have suitable hangers. Hang clothes, coats on wooden ones. Hang blouses, shirts on plastic hangers. Hang everything with the fronts of your dresses facing you. This way, you will notice the garment you want sooner.
7. Additional storage solutions
If, despite your efforts and all the advice, you still lack storage space, it may be time for a new wardrobe or the purchase of modular systems. This gives the cabinet more functionality. Namely, the wardrobe must be functional for each individual, this means that you keep your favorite pieces where they are most easily accessible and you know where you will find them again and again.
