Toyota did something unexpected for this year's SEMA 2024 – it transformed its two most iconic SUVs into convertibles. Land Cruiser Rox and 4Runner TRD Surf will be presented this time with open roofs and even more off-road accessories. Ready for an adventure?
When we talk about the Land Cruiser, we usually think of an icon of durability and reliability that has been considered the ultimate off-road vehicle for decades. This time, Toyota gave the Land Cruiser Rox concept a completely new look: a folding roof and removable C- and D-pillars, which created an open space for an authentic off-road experience.
To compensate for the loss of roof strength, Toyota added additional chassis reinforcement. With functional half doors, extended fenders, all-terrain tires and accessories such as robust steel bumpers and reinforced guards, the Rox easily adapts to the most demanding terrains. At the back, there is also a practical half door with a spare wheel that opens elegantly for quick access to the trunk.
4Runner TRD Surf: A tribute to the 80s with surf style
Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf is a tribute to the 80s, when California's coastal roads were filled with surfers and nostalgics with two-door SUVs. This time version 4Runner TRD Surf became a two-door with a cut-off roof, which allows for a real convertible drive. Plus, the TRD Surf features a classic two-tone color scheme with ocean blue and turquoise accents – ideal for anyone who appreciates the good old days and a carefree ride on the beach.
This 4Runner boasts a proven 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 278 horsepower (207 kW) and 430 Nm of torque, complemented by a custom exhaust system for an even more majestic sound. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and permanent four-wheel drive, the TRD Surf concept flirts with the past, but with modern power and performance.
Concepts for the future or a retro flashback?
Toyota's idea for concepts Land Cruiser Rox and the 4Runner TRD Surf is an unmistakable refresh that stands out among SUVs and plays with the world of convertibles. Equipped with the latest technologies and retro styling, both models show that Toyota is not afraid to push the boundaries.
Although these concepts are yet to appear on regular sales, they certainly showed Toyota's willingness to go to creative excesses. On SEMA 2024 visitors can enjoy views of Land Cruiser Rox and 4Runner TRD Surf and imagine what it would be like to have this type of convertible SUV in your garage.
