Easter is the biggest and oldest Christian holiday. The celebration of Easter is very similar in many countries, but each nation has also introduced certain customs. There are many different customs in Europe, and we have selected some interesting ones below.
Easter customs are part of the tradition of each country. And each of them celebrates this greatest Christian holiday in a special way.
1. Austria
Austrians are known for their beautiful Christmas markets and beautifully decorated cities, so it is not unusual for Austrians to also have Easter fairs. They are the most popular decorated eggs, which are used for decorating the Easter tree or Osterbaum. This type of decoration is part of the tradition in Austria, as well as in Germany and the Netherlands. The tree tops are decorated with eggs, ribbons and other decorations.
In Austria, fire is part of the tradition. Easter bonfires are lit in front of the churches on Holy Saturday, and after the blessing, believers take the fire and take it home in tin containers.
2. Great Britain
The Easter egg hunt is probably the most famous Easter tradition on the island. Toddlers believe that the Easter Bunny is hiding eggs and then looking for them in the gardens. But this is only one of the games that is popular in this part of Europe, as the spoon and egg game is also popular. You need to reach the goal with a spoon with a boiled egg. A favorite treat on the table is the “Hot Cross Buns”, a sweet raisin bun marked with a cross, served with fruit and butter.
3. Spain
The Spanish are a very religious nation and celebrate Easter with special joy. Holy week or Semana Santa is celebrated in complete silence, and with large processions in which all the faithful participate, dressed in the most beautiful clothes. Statues of Jesus, Mary and other saints line the streets of Spain and create something special religious atmosphere. On Easter, however, the celebration continues with food, music and merriment.
4. Italy
As in Spain, in this Mediterranean country, processions take place in many cities during Holy Week. The one in Rome is particularly large, and the mass which it is led by the Pope in the Basilica of St. Peter. Italians love fireworks and pyrotechnics and often celebrate with them. Also eggs are part of the tradition, as in many other countries, as they symbolize the beginning of life. They are used as decoration, but they are also part of the festive table.
5. The Czech Republic
Czechs also dye eggs, but they also have a very unusual custom. On Easter Monday young men go from house to house, where the girls live. This one they beat with whips (pomlázka) made of willow branches and colorful ribbons. Girls give gifts or Easter cards to men because it flatters their attention.
