Unimatic and NASA join forces for the Unimatic x Massena LAB U1-SPG watch, which looks like a prop from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

A stellar opportunity or just another space-themed hype?

Unimatic x Massena LAB U1-SPG “NASA Artemis” – a retro-futuristic GMT diver’s watch that screams for attention

In an age when it seems like every other watch manufacturer has their own “space” edition (we’re looking at you, MoonSwatch), it is a true art to stand out. A Unimatic x MassenThe LAB U1-SPG “NASA Artemis” Limited Edition does just that – and in a color that’s anything but inconspicuous. This retro-futuristic GMT diver in a fiery orange Cerakote shade is sure to turn heads wherever you take it.

Sure, it's not exactly a classic diver, but hey – who says you have to play it safe when choosing a watch?

The next great leap for watchmaking humanity

While the Apollo program made history in the space race in the 1960s and 1970s, NASA is now planning a new chapter in lunar exploration with the Artemis missions. If all goes according to plan, the years 2026 astronauts set foot on the Moon again – for the first time since 1972. The goal? Establishing a permanent lunar base and ultimately – a journey to Mars.

It is this pioneering spirit that William Massena wanted to capture in this special edition. And what better way to do that than with a watch that combines nostalgic vibes from the golden age of space exploration with modern watchmaking technology?

U1-SPG reflects aesthetics 2001: A Space Odyssey, but at the same time remains surprisingly relevant. Imagine if Stanley Kubrick designed a watch – well, it would probably be very similar to this one.

That color… yes, that orange!

First the title star: glowing orange Cerakote coating on the 40mm steel case. It's not a random choice – the hue is a tribute NASA's SLS (Space Launch System) rockets, which will power the Artemis missions. And while orange may not be the first choice for serious dive watches, it plays an important role in space circles—from spacesuits to equipment where high visibility means the difference between life and death.

But Cerakote it's not just for looks – this military-grade ceramic coating has hardness 9 on the Mohs scale, which means serious resistance to scratches and corrosion. And the best part? Over time, it will develop its own character and patina, making each watch unique.

For balance, it is unidirectional 120-click bezel surrounded by dark charcoal gray Cerakote coating – a smart move that prevents the overall aesthetic from becoming too conspicuous (although, let's be real, this is not a time for the shy).

NASA seal of approval

The U1-SPG is not only space-inspired, but also officially licensed NASA watch. Her dial in matte black has vintage NASA “worm” logo above 6 o'clock and Old Radium Super-LumiNova designations that exude a subtle retro energy.

Another detail that impresses? Hollow GMT index hand, which allows easy reading of the time without overlapping the hour markers. The dial perimeter has fully illuminated 24-hour scale – a functional feature that gives it the status of a true toolmaker's watch, despite its futuristic appearance.

Turn the clock and on the back you will find Artemis mission emblem – a stylized letter “A” rising from the Earth towards the Moon. Each hour is numbered and part of a strictly limited series 99 pieces.

Not just a pretty face – but also a real tool beast

It may look like a gadget from a sci-fi movie, but the U1-SPG is primarily robust diving watch. Z waterproof up to 300 meters, 2.5 mm sapphire glass and diving bezel is ready for serious tests – whether in the depths of the oceans or in the vacuum of space forums.

In addition, it has GMT function, which drives it Seiko NH34A automatic movement. Is it spectacular? No. But it is reliable, easy to service and provides affordable price – which is anything but self-evident with limited editions. With 42-hour power reserve This watch is the perfect companion for weekend astronauts and those who frequently jump between time zones.

Attached are two nylon straps – one in matching orange and others in black color for those moments when you want to be a little less NASA astronaut coreBoth versions have Cerakote coated buckle for extra durability.
