Diabetes is the scourge of modern society, and in the US alone, there are predictions that 5 million people will be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by 2050. Scientists are predicting revolutionary disease prevention for the future. Namely, they discovered the possibility of preventing the onset of the disease with a vaccine.
It's diabetes autoimmune disease, which affects children and adults and cannot currently be prevented or treated preventively. To treat type T1D diabetes, patients must constantly monitor their blood glucose (blood sugar) levels and control this level with insulin injections, activity control and special diet food, in order to avoid life-threatening complications with the disease.
For a while now scientists they imply that it is diabetes type T1D can be associated with viral infection, as a result of which some believed for a long time in the possibility of creating a vaccine for this disease. In Finland, researchers have been working in this direction for decades and have been searching for a link and a potential vaccine for the past 25 years. After a long development and an arduous scientific journey, they now believe they have found it virus group, which can triggers diabetes type T1D. The scientists report that the hard work has paid off, as the team has created a vaccine that will move into human clinical trials as early as 2018.
Complications of diabetes, which can otherwise be well controlled, can be fatal and trigger a host of related medical conditions. In case of ineffective management, it causes from heart attack to stroke, amputation, kidney failure and even blindness.
The threat of these health consequences constantly hangs over the heads of those with diabetes type T1D. Unfortunately, the team notes, this vaccine would not be a cure for T1D, but it could change the lives of millions of people worldwide if it proves successful in preventing the onset of diabetes.
