"IKEA's mission is to create a better everyday life for many people, and in food we can contribute to this by offering tastier, healthier and more sustainable choices," he says Helene von Reis, head of the food department at IKEA of Sweden. "We want to offer customers more options for plant-based meals with less impact on the climate. Choosing foods of plant origin often also means a smaller environmental footprint compared to foods that contain animal ingredients."

One of the challenges during development was how to create a plant-based hot dog with a texture similar to a classic hot dog. With the meat version, it's usually the meat casing that provides the crunch when you bite into it. The vegetable hot dog imitates the sound and sensory experience when biting into a regular meat hot dog and crunches like the real thing.

"We have devoted a lot of time to development to ensure the best experience for our customers. With its excellent taste, texture and crispness when bitten, the plant-based hot dog is a great alternative to the classic hot dog," says Helene von Reis.

Vegan hot dog contains rice protein, onion, apple, salt and pepper, has a balanced taste. We also added the characteristic aroma of smoke, which is key to the taste of the sausage.
