Volkswagen continues its electric offensive with the latest member of the ID family. Meet the ID.1 – a compact electric car that promises an affordable price, solid autonomy and enough space for the everyday needs of city drivers. With an expected price of around 20,000 euros (approximately 20,800 USD), it will be one of the cheapest EVs on the market, while offering technology currently reserved for more expensive models.

The Volkswagen ID.1 will be based on the MEB Small platform, which it shares with the larger ID.2. Unlike the larger ID.3 and ID.4 models, which use the classic MEB architecture, the MEB Small is optimized for compact front-wheel drive cars. This means less weight, more interior space and a lower production cost.

Although Volkswagen has not yet revealed all the details, based on the ID.2all technology, we can assume that the ID.1 will be equipped with 50 kWh battery, which will allow him real range of around 300 km on the highway and up to 500 km in the cityFast charging support will allow charging from 10 to 80 % in approximately 20 minutes, which will provide a quick energy boost during the journey.

Accessibility without compromise

Volkswagen's goal is clear: to offer a European electric car at a price that most buyers can afford. The Volkswagen ID.1 will be a direct competitor to Renault's electric Twingo, which is also aimed at a price range of around 20,000 euros. According to VW boss Thomas Schäfer, the ID.1 will “a high-quality, affordable and profitable electric Volkswagen – from Europe for Europe”.

Although the design is not yet fully revealed, the first teasers suggest that the ID.1 will take the design cues of the ID.2all, but in an even more compact and city-friendly form. The interior will follow the minimalist approach we are used to from other ID models, with a large central screen and a digitalized cockpit.

The future of urban electric vehicles

The Volkswagen ID.1 could become one of the most important electric cars of this decade. With its combination of low price, solid range and advanced technology, it has all the conditions to repeat the success of the former Volkswagen Polo – except this time it will be completely electric.

The first prototypes can be expected as early as next year, with the full reveal of the model expected to take place in 2026, before the car hits the roads in 2027. Will the ID.1 really be the model that brings electric mobility to the masses?
