With its latest one-off ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, Volkswagen has returned to the 90s when it set a fashion and automotive trend with the Golf Fire and Ice. This time, however, this legendary design has been given a new life in the electric age in collaboration with BOGNER.
Volkswagen is on ID. presented his latest masterpiece at the meeting in Locarno, Switzerland, Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE. In collaboration with the luxury sports fashion brand BOGNER, Volkswagen has revived the spirit of the 90s and the famous Golf Fire and Ice. This time it is a completely electric interpretation, which with unique external and internal elements revives the spirit of the past, but at the same time boldly enters the future.
Andreas Mindt, head of design at Volkswagen, emphasizes that with this model they wanted to emphasize the emotional note and the sporty side of their most powerful model. "Our design team enthusiastically reinterpreted the iconic design from the 90s and developed it further," added Mindt.
BOGNER's vision in the modern age
Cooperation with the BOGNER brand is no coincidence, as the original Golf Fire and Ice was already designed in cooperation with the same brand. Tom Becker, director of BOGNER FIRE+ICE, describes this collaboration as a modern interpretation of the iconic model. By including many original materials and accessories in the interior, they created a unique interweaving of the past and the future.
An exterior that surprises
ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE differs from other models at first glance. A special three-dimensional paint with a pearl effect and glass beads gives the car an extraordinary character. The color Electric Violet is a modern reinterpretation of the original Golf Fire and Ice, which changes according to the light - from dark blue, violet, all the way to black. The roof frame in the strong Flaming Red color and the 21-inch wheels with a blue anodized coating further emphasize the sporty appearance of the vehicle.
On the sides of the vehicle there is foil with a geometric FIRE+ICE pattern, which is highlighted by a transparent matte surface. The original FIRE+ICE logo from the 90s adorns the B-pillar and rear spoiler, giving this car a touch of history with a modern twist.
Surprising interior
Inside, two colors intertwine - red and blue, representing "fire" and "ice". The driver's seat and the seat behind him are painted in Flaming Red, while the passenger seat and the area behind him are finished in Ice Blue. The accelerator and brake pedals are designed in a special FIRE+ICE design - by pressing "FIRE" you accelerate, and by pressing "ICE" you brake. The dashboard and floor mats are also decorated with a laser-engraved FIRE+ICE pattern.
Volkswagen drew inspiration for the interior from the BOGNER collection, which is why we find many elements and color combinations that are characteristic of this brand. The seats are quilted and mimic the design of the FIRE+ICE down jackets, including the iconic B-zippers. Opening these zips reveals the original FIRE+ICE merchandise from the 90s, giving the car a truly unique touch.
Electrical performance for the 21st century
Under the hood ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE hides the most powerful electric engine of the Volkswagen brand with 240 kW (326 PS) and a maximum torque of 545 Nm. This means that this electric car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, which puts it alongside many sports cars. The top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h.
With a powerful 79 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery pack, the vehicle achieves a combined range of up to 601 km (according to the WLTP standard). Charging is a quick process as it supports charging up to 185 kW, which means you can charge the battery from 10 to 80 % in about 26 minutes. Thus, driving with the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is suitable for both city and longer trips.
A look into the past and the future
In 1990, Volkswagen introduced the Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, which became a cult car with its extravagant looks, performance and collaboration with fashion designer Willy Bogner. With this special model, designed for fans of fast driving and fashion, Volkswagen set the stage for tremendous success - 16,700 units were sold, although only 10,000 were initially planned.
The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE honors this heritage in a special way and carries it into the modern era of electric mobility. The combination of advanced technology, a powerful electric motor and a unique design brings something completely new, while maintaining the spirit and style of the original model.
Conclusion
The Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is more than just a tribute to the past. It is a masterpiece that combines sportiness, innovation and iconic design. It's a vehicle that brings fun, performance and cutting-edge technology to the road, while reviving the nostalgic spirit of the 90s in modern electric form.
With its strong electric performance, unique interior and stunning exterior, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE proves that electric cars are not only the future, but also a place for creativity and emotion. Although it is a one-off model, it is a clear sign that Volkswagen offers electric vehicles not only sustainability, but also passion and personality.
