A reliable British media outlet reports that Volkswagen will end production of the ID.5, the “coupe” version of the ID.4, in 2027. At the same time, the Touareg is also saying goodbye in 2026. In the background: cleaning up the range and moving towards the more affordable electric models ID.2 (~€25,000) and ID.1 (~€20,000).
Volkswagen Electrics are finally doing better, but not for all models. A classic marketing story: some products take off, while others quietly leave the stage. In Wolfsburg, the next model to be released is expected to be ID.5 – SUV with a coupe-like roofline, which is technically the ID.4's twin, but with a less useful rear.
According to unofficial information within the company, which is summarized Coach, the ID.5 will be in production by 2027, and then the model is said to be gone without a direct successor. The reason? Slower than planned sales – especially in China, where the car had the greatest potential on paper; while in Europe, buyers overwhelmingly chose the more “square” and spacious ID.4. The ID.5 was never launched in the US.
Broader belt tightening: the end for the Touareg and (for now) no “mini Buzz” van
According to the same information, Volkswagen will Touareg stopped making years ago 2026; the largest SUV will be replaced in many markets by a newer and more affordable tayron (also with 7 seats and up to 2,500 kg towing capacity). As part of the consolidation, a smaller, more urban version was also postponed in committee discussions “mini Buzz”.
At the same time, electricity numbers are flying
The Volkswagen Group reported in the first half of the year +47 percent delivery growth BEV and 465.500 electric vehicles sold – this shows that the strategy is working as a whole, although individual models (like the ID.5) will give way to more successful ones.
Why didn't the ID.5 catch on?
The coupe-SUV shape is harder to sell than a “classic” SUV: less headroom over the back seat, slightly worse visibility and the feeling that you are paying more for less usable liters of cabin space. In Europe, that is why ID.4 picked up the majority of customers, ID.5 It remained a niche charmer. In China, it failed to “break through the noise” of local electric competitors.
What comes instead? Focus on affordable ID.2 and ID.1
Volkswagen is shifting its focus to small, mass-market electric models: ID.2 should stand around 25.000 €, ID.1 and around 20.000 € and came towards 2027These are the very cards aimed at the "democratization of electricity" that the European market has been waiting for for a long time.
What does this mean for the customer today?
If the ID.5 is visually and drivingly closer to you than the ID.4, the "last chance" is still here for a few more years - the model will reportedly be in production until 2027, supplies and after-sales support don't disappear overnight. But if the priority is spaciousness and practicality, will be designed using the same technique ID.4 remained a more logical choice – also from the perspective of value on the used market when the ID.5 model is no longer available.
Conclusion: Volkswagen is not “against electrics” – on the contrary, BEV sales results show an acceleration. But it is clear that in an era of rationalization and price pressure, they are winning. high-volume and more affordable models. ID.5 was a nice niche, but the market (for now) rewards the utility of the ID.4 and the promise of the cheap ID.2/ID.1.
