The Volvo XC60 has become one of the most recognizable mid-size SUVs since its launch in 2017. With more than 1.5 million units sold worldwide and record sales in 2024, it is the model that defines the success of the Swedish brand. For the 2026 model year, Volvo is bringing its biggest upgrade ever, including an improved user experience, new design and even more prestige.
But is that enough to Volvo XC60 stays on top? German rivals – Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC – they're not slow to develop. Volvo is now responding with a bigger screen, a faster infotainment system, a more luxurious interior and upgraded technology. Let's see what this means for customers.
A new generation of user experience: bigger screen, fewer distractions
The refreshed XC60 gets a new generation of Volvo's infotainment system, which has been completely redesigned with the user in mind. The star is the larger, 11.2-inch floating display, which delivers 21 % higher resolution than before. This means clearer graphics and even better displays of maps, apps and system settings.
At the heart of this system is the next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, which delivers twice the performance and up to 10 times faster graphics rendering. This means smoother transitions, less stuttering, and faster touch response.
Of course, Google Built-in is still there, meaning you have direct access to Google Maps, Google Assistant and apps from the Google Play Store – all without the need to connect to your phone. And the best part? If you have a 2020 Volvo model or later, this upgrade will come to you over the air (OTA update).
Minimalist elegance and new shades of Scandinavian prestige
Volvo is known for its understated yet sophisticated design, and the XC60 stays true to that philosophy. The refreshed model brings subtle but noticeable changes that give it a more modern look. The new front now includes a refreshed grille that follows the design guidelines of the larger XC90. New wheel options and slightly darker LED rear lights have also been added.
The color palette is expanding with three new shades: Forest Lake, Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red. These colors emphasize the elegance of the model and give it an even more prestigious touch.
Inside, it’s a similar story: new luxury materials such as Nordico quilting and Navy Herringbone Weave elevate the sense of exclusivity. The cleverly designed interior now includes improved storage solutions, new cup holders and a more advanced wireless phone charger.
Quieter and more comfortable ride with premium audio system
One of the most praised features of Volvo models is their comfort. The XC60 builds on this with improved soundproofing and even more ergonomic seats. There is also an optional air suspension, which further smooths the ride and gives it a sense of prestige.
Fans of premium acoustics will be delighted with the upgraded Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system. The new design of the sound grilles allows for even clearer sound, recreating a concert experience in the cabin.
What does this refresh mean for the competition?
With the 2026 model year, the Volvo XC60 not only remains competitive, but sets new standards for Scandinavian luxury. While the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC focus on sportiness, Volvo continues to play its own game: calm, thoughtful design, advanced technology and timeless elegance.
If you want an SUV that combines Scandinavian simplicity, superior comfort and the latest technology, then the refreshed Volvo XC60 is definitely one of the best candidates on the market.
