What do you have planned for next week? And next year? Have you ever thought about what you will be doing in 250 million years? Probably not. But you might be wondering what the Earth will look like then. 250 million years is enough for its face to change as well. So many years ago, a meteorite flew to our planet, wiped out 90 percent of all living things and left an imprint in the form of a crater in Antarctica. But that is the past.
Christopher Scott, professor from the department Earth and Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University in the US, deals with the future.
Not just any kind, but the Earth's. Based on the theory of tectonic shifts and global warming has created various animated maps showing Earth in 250 million years. From the map we can see that it will be Pangea Ultima, as Scotese called our planet, because of ocean floor subduction in the North and South Atlantic under North or South America, a single huge continent, with a small ocean trapped in the middle. The same fate is expected to befall the Indian Ocean. They are expected to unite both Americas and Africa, Patagonia is said to touch Indonesia. Antarctica will move back to the South Pole, and the Pacific Ocean will cover the area of all the continents of today.
That would be interesting to experience, wouldn't it?
