The latest results from a British sleep survey suggest that women should set their alarm clocks 20 minutes later. Read why.
Women use more of their brains.
Research of the UK's Loughborough University showed that women should sleep 20 minutes more than men because their brains work more complexly and intensively due to multitasking. In other words, women use more of their brains than men during the day.
The author of the study, which covered 210 middle-aged women and men, Jim Horne, said of the research results: "Women do many things at the same time during the day, so they use a larger part of their brain than men. In order for them to be properly restored, women need to sleep more."
Men in certain professions also need more sleep.
The same goes for men, whose jobs require many important decisions and thinking outside the box. About 20 minutes more sleep is enough.
"One of the most important tasks of sleep is for the brain to recover. The part of the brain responsible for memory and language rests and regenerates during deep sleep." said Horne.
Side effects of sleep deprivation in women to watch out for.
The study also showed that lack of sleep in women has many unwanted side effects. Distraction, psychological stress, aggression, depression and anger may occur. These effects were not observed in men who did not sleep enough.
