Slovenian snow records: the latest snowfall in the lowlands in Slovenia

Winter in the middle of spring

The snow has stuck to the road, traffic accidents follow one after the other, many are left without electricity, branches are breaking due to the wet snow, chains are mandatory on the Jezersko pass, even the railway line is closed. In Carinthia, 25 centimeters of snow fell during the day. No, this is not a report from the middle of winter, this is an entry from April 27, 2016. Just a few days ago we were flying around in almost summer clothes and shoes, but yesterday we had to pull out the winter gear from the closets, which we were sure that she went on a well-deserved rest. True, the snow caught most of us on the left foot, but the shock experienced in 1974, when we recorded the latest snowfall in the lowlands in Slovenia, is still much smaller than 42 years later.

It covered Slovenia snowfall. Not unusual, if it were not for the end of April, when it seemed that we were closer to summer than the end of winter, when we already wore short sleeves and even flip-flops and winter seemed as far away as Australia. A winter returned overnight, first on Brač and in Sarajevo, and now with us, and caught everyone off guard, including blooming nature, which is the only one that really suffers during snowfalls and we hear her screams and moans.

Winter has returned to Slovenia. Apparently she forgot to fly "to" the southern hemisphere.

After the fat has already accumulated on the plows pollen, when we are shovels for tearing exchanged for shovels and hoes and already set the thermostats in the car to a lower temperature than the outside, because we had to pinch ourselves in the exhalations of April when we looked out the window and stared at whitewashed surroundings and shook their heads at the low temperatures, and lighting a fire in the fireplace seemed a better idea than visiting a bonfire.

Bled also turned white. Many tourists were clearly not prepared for the snow, as they had water (sup) and not snow boards for skiing on Straža.

But if you thought that this was the latest snowfall to the lowlands in Slovenian regions in history, the late April snowfall is still a long way from this snow record. The latest snowfall to the lowlands in Slovenian regions (below 500 m above sea level) was recorded in 1974, when winter sent a parcel of snow to the land June 10 in Nomenju (a settlement in Bohinj municipality). She probably had the wrong address, just like yesterday. Be in bloom! Sorry, in the snow.
