IMDb's 10 Best Comedies of All Time

What are the best comedies of all time, comedies that are truly worth your time?

Comedy is not as simple a genre as we might imagine. Namely, it is not easy to achieve that the film is witty, but at the same time has an intelligent plot, elaborate dialogue and interesting characters that go beyond cute comments and bizarre situations in which they find themselves. That's how we reviewed it today IMDb and chose 10 best comedies, that have ever made the IMDb list The 250 Greatest Movies of All Time. For this reason, some of the films on the list cannot be classified solely and strictly in the comedy genre, because very often it is a mix of drama, comedy, thriller and dark humor genres.

Parasite (2019)

This is a film that may be the most prominent cinematic achievement of the last few years. After the screening in Cannes, the audience applauded for eight minutes, and logically - it won both the Palme d'Or and the Oscar, and with this triumph, this South Korean film made Oscar history (the first international film to win the Oscar for Best Picture). The plot follows a poor family that tries to find a way to break into a richer and more glamorous family, but doesn't count on complications along the way. As well as being a fantastic piece of social criticism and commentary, Parasite is an extremely witty film and a great choice for anyone who likes dark humour.

The Intouchables (2011)

The wonderful French comedy starring the fantastic Omar Sy (who delighted us in Lupine this year) and Francois Cluzet is one of the best comedies of all time. This is the story of a successful and wealthy Phillip, who is paralyzed from the neck down and is looking for a new assistant. By chance, this becomes Driss, a young man who comes from a diametrically opposite environment or social status. He is direct and doesn't feel sorry for Phillipe, making him an ideal candidate. As a result, a close friendship blossoms between them - they force each other to step out of their comfort zones, and the result is touching and downright funny!

Back to the Future (1985)

Who doesn't love the legendary film Back to the Future? Marty McFly has been a favorite movie character for many generations, and with each viewing, we are re-impressed with the overall aesthetic and plot of the film. The American comedy has become one of the most popular franchises of all time, and the story of Marty McFly, a teenager who travels back in time with the eccentric Professor Brown, is followed by generations and generations.

Modern Times (1936)

It's certainly not the kind of comedy you're probably used to, but it's a witty classic starring Charlie Chaplin. It was recorded in 1936 and is a sharp commentary on the state of American society at that time due to the great economic crisis or the Great Depression. Chaplin wrote, directed and produced the film, and Modern Times is an interesting choice if you want to watch something different.

City Lights (1931)

Chaplin signs another film from the list of the best comedies ever made. It is a silent film, this time a romantic comedy, and was named the 11th best film ever made by the American Film Institute (AFI). In the film, we follow Chaplin's vagabond, who falls in love with a blind girl whose family is on shaky financial ground.

3 Idiots (2009)

The list also includes an Indian comedy from the year with excellent reviews. The plot follows three friends, set in two time periods, and through bizarre adventures actually talks about social pressure. Two friends thus reminisce about their time in college and search for a third friend who inspired them to be completely themselves.

dr. Strange Love (1964)

Stanley Kubrick's war comedy, which today is considered a masterpiece, penetrated the senselessness of war through fantastic black humor. It follows a paranoid air force general, an enemy of the Soviet Union, who orders the launch of a nuclear attack, and a handful of those who try to prevent a global cataclysm that can be caused by a single person's decision.

The Great Dictator (1940)

That's right – another Chaplin! And perhaps one of his most famous films. The Great Dictator, published in 1940, quickly became controversial. Chaplin's first film with sound is a parody and satire on Adolf Hitler. The story is set during the First World War in the imaginary country of Tomainia and follows a Jew who died fighting for the country and lost his memory for 20 long years. What will happen when he wakes up to find that Tomainio has been taken over by the dictator Adenoid Hynkel?

Chhichhore (2019)

The Indian film Chhichhore is also on the IMDb chart. It has been nominated for numerous film awards due to the excellence of its cast and its examination of social reality. The film follows a divorcee, Anni Pathak, whose son attempts suicide, but luckily fails. While lying in the hospital, his father begins to tell him stories about his experiences in college and about the friends who marked that period of his life. They soon join him so that his son can see how the biggest losers are born into the biggest winners.

Amélie (2001)

The list would not be complete without a French romantic comedy with a slight fantasy twist, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The story revolves around a young girl, Amelie, who is looking for love for herself and others in Paris. The film achieved great reputation and international success, becoming one of the most famous achievements of French cinema.
