Before the upcoming World Bee Day, this time A1 Slovenia shines a light on lesser-known solitary bees with its activities. The exceptional pollinators, which are often in the shadow of the honey bees, are under great threat due to changes in the environment, and it is increasingly difficult to find suitable places for nesting. That is why A1 Slovenija added a new use to its logo in front of an office building in Ljubljana - it has become a hotel for solitary bees. With this, the company continues with activities for urban beekeeping and creating suitable conditions for the life of bees in the city.
Every year, on World Bee Day, organizations and companies draw attention to the importance of bees, which are supposed to provide every third spoonful of food with their pollination. But not only honey bees and the Slovenian Carniola bee, lesser-known solitary bees take care of a large part of pollination. They are much more efficient at pollination, as one solitary bee can do the work of hundreds of honeybees. A1 Slovenia is therefore raising awareness of solitary bees on this year's World Bee Day and, with its activities, increases the number of suitable places for nesting in the urban environment.
"With the environmental activities that we implement in A1 Slovenia within the ambitious ESG strategy, we want to be a role model for other companies and encourage our partners, users and employees to actively take care of our planet. Bees are an important part of this, which is why we are upgrading our activity in this area by drawing attention to solitary bees. With the hotel we have placed inside our logo, we welcome them and hope that we have also encouraged others to find a suitable place for them to nest in companies or gardens." he said An actual Turk, chairman of the board of A1 Slovenia and A1 Serbia.
The first hotel for bees in Ljubljana
For the appropriate design of a hotel for solitary bees, the company A1 teamed up with the Črmljica Society - the Slovenian Society for the Protection of Pollinators, which welcomes the initiative and emphasizes that each of us can help solitary bees: "Solitary bees are important and excellent pollinators, but unfortunately they are increasingly rare. Due to changes in the environment, especially intensive agriculture and changed construction methods, it is increasingly difficult for them to find enough food and a suitable nesting place. We can help them by planting honey plants, maintaining a blooming lawn and setting up nesting boxes. We will be happy to watch the settlement of the nest box in front of the A1 and we hope that it inspires some passers-by to help the solitary bees." he said dr. Danilo Bevk, doctor of biological sciences and president of the Čmrljica association.
Solitary bees will join six bee families A1 Slovenia
A1 Slovenia has been raising awareness of the importance of bees for our lives for several years with various activities. Among other things, on the roof of the office building, he takes care of six bee colonies, which produce around 100 kilograms of high-quality and many-awarded honey every year. As the president of the board promised, in the coming years the company will look for ways to inspire individuals and companies to help bees themselves and to increase the network of hotels for solitary bees in Slovenia.
