Forget everything you know about RVs. The stuff about crowds, clutter, and a mini-kitchen where you're inches away from your roommate. No, this is the Airstream x Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian Limited Edition – and it's a RV that married an architecture museum, got its designer genes, and went on a dream road trip through Arizona.
What happens when America's greatest architect meets the most iconic trailer brand? A traveling design capsule is created - Airstream x Frank Lloyd Wright, which at a price of almost $185,000 isn't for everyone – but hey, did you see that light through the 29(!) windows?
Legacy, light and lots of aluminum
Airstream was given access to the secret archives of Taliesin West for this project. And there – in the dust and plans from 1939 – he found Wright’s unrealized concept of a mobile kitchen. That was the beginning of the story. What followed was a cocktail of Usonian philosophy, desert aesthetics and modern technology.
The trailer is 8.6 meters long, 2.57 meters wide and weighs 3,084 kilograms. But the numbers aren’t what get you. What gets you is the feeling of being in the middle of the desert, and the light streaming through the circular “porthole” windows creates an almost spiritual experience. It’s like being in a church of light – except it also has a stove, an 8-cu ft refrigerator and 300W solar panels.
Everything is thought out. Every detail.
The sleeping area is hidden in the back, and when you open the back door, you’re greeted by a view that others seek out on postcards. The twin beds convert to a king-size bed at the touch of a button—the largest bed in the Airstream lineup. The front of the trailer is a living room, dining room, office, and bedroom—all at once. Wright would be proud. No, Wright would buy it.
The interior is full of hidden tricks: folding tables, chairs, hidden drawers and open shelves that replace upper cabinets. Everything works in the rhythm of space, light and your needs. And then – the details: Gordon leaf motifs on doors and lamps, handmade wall coverings, and that feeling of being in a design capsule from the future, approved by the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright himself.
