Unusually beautiful shelters in the Slovenian mountains: 3 charming Slovenian bivouacs

Slovenians can boast of breathtaking highlands. When the night or weather conditions surprise us during our visit, we have bivouacs at our disposal, which are praised all over the world for their modern designs. But beware, bivouacs are far from intended for multi-day vacations, but rather serve as a shelter that can also save lives.

Bivouac under Skuta

Probably the most immortalized bivouac in the Slovenian highlands is the bivouac under Skuta. There was once a bivouac on this site, and the dilapidated building was replaced by a new one, modern and sophisticated in design. The design is signed by Harvard University students who created under the watchful eye of Rok Oman and Špela Videčnik from OFIS architects. The bivouac can accommodate eight mountaineers, and due to the beautiful view through the panoramic windows and attractive shape, many mistakenly regard it as a tourist accommodation.

Bivouac next to Zasavska koča in Prehodavci

Since the wind severely damaged the roof structure of the bivouac, Prehodavci decided to restore it, but it was not a classic restoration. The architectural bureau Premica has thoroughly transformed the building, thus creating a bivouac that blends beautifully with the mountain landscape at an altitude of 2,065 meters. The technologically simple construction of cross-glued wooden panels looks modern, but at the same time it fits perfectly with the wild mountain nature.

Bivouac II on the Lakes

After the old bivouac found a home in the Slovenian Mountain Museum in Mojstrana due to dilapidation, in 2016 a new, more modern one grew in its place. It offers shelter to six visitors to the mountains and serves as a starting point for approaches to Veliki Rokav, Veliki Altar, Dovški Križ and Šplevta. In addition to communal beds, the bivouac also has a bench and a folding table, as well as convenient storage and a double USB port for charging mobile phones.
