In 1997, when the Guggenheim Museum opened its doors in Bilbao, the Basque city quickly became one of the most attractive architectural destinations. Frank Gehry's museum is still one of the biggest attractions, but it is far from the only one.

But this is only the beginning of cultural attractions. The lively town boasts a number of museums and a charming old town, as well as an excellent culinary offer. What should I see in Bilbao?
As mentioned, the first attraction that tourists go to is The Guggenheim Museum. The building itself is absolutely spectacular, as it is considered an important landmark of 20th century architecture. Designed by famed architect Frank Gehry, the swirling structure was completed in 1997. Inside the building, 24,000 square meters of space is dedicated to art. The highlight of the museum's works of art are the abstract work by the painter Mark Rothko called Villa Borghese, the painting "Only with wind, time and sound" by Willem de Kooning and Sunflowers by Anselm Kiefer.
Among the museum's sculptural installations, the most noteworthy are a nine-meter spider sculpture called Maman by Louise Bourgeois and a giant dog sculpture called "Puppy" by Jeff Koons. Bilbao is home to many museums. Museum of Fine Arts invites with its varied collection housed in as many as two separate buildings. The works of European masters from the 14th to the 17th centuries are exhibited in the historic building. Here you can find the works of famous painters such as El Greco, Dirk Bouts, Jaime Huguet, Quentin Matsys and others.
The old town of Bilbao - Casco Viejo, on the right bank of the river, stretching between the San Antón Bridge and the San Nicolás Church, is especially charming. Its core is represented by seven streets or Siete Calles: Somera, Artecalle, Tendería, Belosticalle, Carnicería Vieja, Barrencalle and Barrencalle Barena. Take your time and wander along the cute cobbled streets lined with charming cafes and shops. You can find it at Plaza de Arriaga Teatro Arriaga, an elegant neo-baroque theater inspired by the Palais Garnier in Paris. An important landmark of Casca Viejo is the Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari. The church with a baroque facade and a unique octagonal interior from the 14th century was completely renovated in 1756. The center of the action in the old town center is Plaza Nueva, a neoclassical square from the mid-19th century. The square is surrounded by elegant arcaded buildings that house restaurants, cafes and cozy tapas bars.
Plaza Nueva is a popular meeting place for locals, and on sunny days the square becomes the center of social life, a sort of outdoor living room. Do not overlook the threads Cathedral of Santiago, a baroque cathedral from the 15th century, which acquired its Gothic appearance only four centuries later. The cathedral with its magnificent interior and three naves and ribbed vaulted ceilings is a real feast for the eyes. The central nave rises 22 meters high and gives an awe-inspiring appearance of grandeur. Not far away is Doña Casilda Park, full of palm trees and beautiful leafy trees and colorful flowers, offering a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. This vast green area is beautifully landscaped in a romantic style and decorated with neoclassical statues and fountains.
