Zoran Šimić's bivouac in Bosnia and Herzegovina is an excellent example of the new wave of Balkan architects

Zoran Šimić's bivouac in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Zoran Šimić's bivouac, located on the remote Visočica mountain range in Bosnia and Herzegovina, serves as a shelter for hikers and offers a wonderful view of the landscape. It is the first such "object" of this typology in this speech, which has only recently become more accessible with the development of local road infrastructure!

It is also one of the few locations where hiking trails cross the canyon, where the two mountains connect and where the view spreads out over the vast, breathtaking scenery. The project is designed with this very purpose in mind: to expose visitors to this wonderful view and thereby emphasize the hiking experience.

The exterior of the bivouac was designed with the idea that it should reduce the carbon footprint and that there is no need to destroy the surroundings to set up the bivouac itself. The interior space of the bivouac, which is capable of receiving up to nine visitors, has three platforms that can serve like seats and beds.

"The bivouac was built with very limited resources, in difficult high mountain conditions, but with a great deal of volunteer spirit and cooperation, which would have been impossible in a purely commercial context," they say at Filter Architecture. "The main challenge was transportation, so a military helicopter was engaged to transport construction materials to the construction site. The fact that one of the leading architects is an experienced alpinist played a decisive role in the design of the bivouac and increased the quality of the user experience. The architects of Filter Architecture actually contributed to the construction of the bivouac, together with members of the local mountain club Željezničar, making it a truly community-wide project.”
