Canon PowerShot Zoom: A pocket-sized device that's part camera, part monocular

Conventional compact cameras are slowly saying goodbye, so Canon is trying something completely different! So it launched the PowerShot Zoom, a "compact telephoto monocular" with a design that gives the camera the look of binoculars. It's designed not only for 12MP stills and 1080p video recording, but also for "hiking, birdwatching and nature," according to Canon.

In order to keep everything within the limits of "smallness", it has Canon PowerShot Zoom a relatively small 1/3-inch sensor, along with an f/5.6-6.3 lens that supports 100mm or 400mm focal lengths, and digital zoom up to 800mm (full-frame equivalent). As mentioned above, you can record photos with 12 MP and 1080p videos (with a modest ISO 100-3200), and optical stabilization and automatic focus for the latter are also built-in. The battery should last for approx 150 recordings.

Canon also presents the device as monocular, which with its 2.36 MP EVF gives you an extremely "pozoom" view of sporting events, wildlife, concerts or the landscape. Application Canon Camera Connect makes it easy to capture and share via smartphone. In this mode, the PowerShot Zoom will operate approx 70 minutes, before the battery needs to be recharged via the USB-C port.

It is a rather unique device, with which Canon is clearly trying something different, with which it could replace the market of "budget" compact cameras, which have been almost completely replaced by smartphones. PowerShot Zoom will be available at the end of November 2020 for around 300 euros.
