House Rogač: an outstanding holiday house on beautiful Vis

Photo: booking.com

In the small town of Vis on the island of the same name, there is a wonderful holiday house that combines high design standards with surmountable challenges - House Rogač.

The architects of the studio are located on a steep plot of land rising above the port of Viš Studio Archaos designed an interesting modern stone house. With the choice of materials, they paid tribute to the local architectural tradition, and with the form itself they responded to the challenges of the location. The interesting holiday house is distinguished by the local Viški stone on the facade, which is in synergy with the polished concrete slabs with which the cantilever terraces are made. These come out of the building like bridges and connect the house with the outside world. Access to the building towards the terrain is also carried out by a bridge, which is the best solution according to the required building regulations of the location. With the selected materials, the architects wanted to harmoniously combine archetypal stone and modern concrete and reinterpret the image of a traditional stone house.

The floor plan has also been redesigned, offering a new insight into communication with the terrain. Through the main entrance we enter the sleeping areas, next to which there is also a large terrace with a view of the Dalmatian islands. Go down the stairs to the first floor, where there are two more bedrooms with attached bathrooms, and one floor lower is the living room with a large cantilever summer terrace. Due to the position and height of the building, it is placed in the shade during the summer months, but at the same time it offers magnificent views of the surroundings. On the lowest floor, we find a place for socializing with a wine cellar, which opens onto the summer kitchen via the terrace.

The house is located among centuries-old mighty cornflowers, which is why it got its name Carob. The monolithic volume of the house is executed in rough hewn stone and rises from a steep slope and a dense grove of trees, and its shape reflects the nearby tower. The openings on the facade are the result of a deliberate escalation of intimacy and views. Large glazed surfaces open up wonderful views and continue with terraces and balconies, while smaller ones frame individual views of the surroundings and provide light. Due to its orientation towards the terrain and the road, the southern facade is almost completely closed, which means that all the necessary light comes from the remaining three directions. The only openings to the ground are the main entrance and the side entrance, which is reached by a steep staircase.
