Huacachina – a piece of paradise in the middle of the Peruvian desert

Huacachina Oasis in Peru

Imagine sitting on top of a high desert dune, admiring the setting sun, and below you lies a dreamlike desert lagoon surrounded by palm trees. In the middle of the Peruvian desert, there is a piece of paradise hidden, the oasis of Huacachina, where only a few hundred inhabitants live.

Huacachina maybe not as famous as Nazca in the south, but it's just as beautiful. This one a desert oasis is located only a good 4 kilometers from the city Ice on south of Peru. It flourished between the 1940s and 1950s, when the Peruvian elite began to use it as a getaway destination. Legend has it that the oasis was created when a young hunter caught a beautiful princess there while bathing. She ran away from him, leaving behind a pool of water that later formed a lagoon. In order to access the underground water, the locals built quite a few wells, and as a result the water level in the lagoon dropped significantly. In order not to dry you out completely, they now add water themselves.

Today is Huacachina above all, a paradise for backpackers. It is characterized by surfing on the dunes that surround it and which attract all adrenaline junkies. The oasis is a very popular tourist destination where, as in most deserts, the temperatures are high and it is sunny all year round. The main tourist season is between May and August, when it is winter there. Huacachina however, it is anything but a peaceful village, as there are quite a few nightclubs that disturb the peace of the night.

Dune surfing
It is a sporting activity like snowboarding, except in this case it is replaced by desert sand. Being the biggest attraction, you can easily rent a board on the streets of Huacachina, climb the 200 meter high desert dune and slide down it.

'buggy ride'
Another, according to many, extremely exciting activity in Huacachini, is intended for all lovers of adrenaline sports. It's a wild ride through the desert dunes or ti buggy ride with four-wheelers and jeeps. Rides are offered by most hotels, and these usually last a good two hours and end with admiring the sunset over the desert.
