Volkswagen ID.4: The first electric SUV in the Volkswagen range

ID.4

The trend of urban SUVs is so strong that, after the ID.3 model, Volkswagen is announcing the first electric SUV in its range - it will be the ID.4.

Volkswagen with model ID.4 its offer includes a fully electric vehicle from the fastest growing segment in the world, i.e. compact class SUV-is in. In the future, the car will be produced and sold in Europe, China and later also in the USA.

“The ID.4 represents an electric evolution in design,” he said Zyciora, Head of Design at the Volkswagen Group. “Its exterior design is clean, fluid and powerful. It has a powerful and confident effect in some new way. This is mainly due to the seamless, aerodynamic design style of our ID. family, which we are bringing to the SUV segment for the first time with the ID.4 model. This means that mild, soft transitions work hand in hand with sharp, clearly defined edges. For the design, it feels like it was shaped by the wind. At the same time, the modernity of the ID.4 can be seen in the characteristic headlights and the light graphics that connect them.”

ID.4. will be a nice SUV that will not be excessively expensive than the ID.4

In addition, good design is always functional – in an electric car, air resistance is one of the key factors for range. "The electric evolution in the design of the ID.4 means that we have taken aerodynamic aspects very seriously," explained the head of design in the concern. ID.4 achieves an excellent coefficient of air resistance – 0.28. The most important role in this is played by the flowing basic shape of the body and the passenger compartment, which is strongly drawn in towards the rear. Then there are many details that are realized very precisely. For example, the rear light units together with the large air deflector at the edge of the roof ensure that the air flow is nicely interrupted.

A concept SUV that is getting closer to production. It should be presented by the end of the year!

As part of its "Transform 2025+" strategy, the Volkswagen brand will invest 11 billion euros in electric mobility by 2024. The ID.4, Volkswagen's first fully electric SUV, is the second model after the ID.32 to be based on the new Modular Electric Vehicle Platform (MEB). This platform is designed for electric drive only and thanks to its compact structure, it offers an extremely large amount of space inside. Because low drag coefficient (0.28) and the expandable ID.4 battery system enables a range of over 500 kilometers (according to WLTP criteria).

New SUV will first come to the market with rear-wheel drive, and then it will also follow electric four-wheel drive. The high-voltage battery, which is installed in the sandwich base of the body, ensures a low and thus optimal center of gravity for driving dynamics and a very well-balanced distribution of axle loads.
