Today at the Japan Motor Show served up an exciting surprise for sports car fans. Mazda has unveiled its new Iconic SP concept, the future Mazda Miata, which brings back the long-awaited rotary engine. This new gem, with its recognizable design reminiscent of last year's Vision Study, is a worthy successor to the legendary RX-7 models, albeit in a slightly different, modern guise.

The Mazda Iconic SP resurrected the spirit of the rotary engine that last impressed in 2012. But this time in a role that few expected. This is the vision for the new generation Mazda Miata. In this attractive concept, the rotary engine does not drive the wheels, but serves as a generator to charge the battery of unknown capacity. The electrical energy is then transferred to an unspecified electric motor unit, which impresses with a power of 365 horsepower (271 kW).

The versatility of this rotary engine is worth noting, as it can run on a variety of fuels, including hydrogen and renewable fuels. Charging the battery is also simple, as the Iconic SP can be plugged into a home electrical outlet. Which is what you would expect from the future Mazda Miata as well.

With its dimensions of 418 cm in length, 210 cm in width and 115 cm in height, the Iconic SP is slightly larger from the current MX-5 model – or the Mazda Miata and at the same time represents to many a vision of the future of this very model, while also being 10 cm shorter than the 1995 RX-7. as much as 360 kg heavier than the Miata model. But compared to the 1,516 kg (3,342 lb) Toyota Supra or the 1,595 kg (3,519 lb) Nissan Z, the Iconic SP still remains in the moderate weight class.

Mazda's history has always been rich in innovation, especially in the field of rotary engines. The Iconic SP continues this tradition and offers an exciting glimpse into Mazda's future, where the past meets the present and heralds an electric future.

The Mazda Iconic SP is thus more than just a car; it is a symbol of Mazda's commitment to innovation and at the same time a tribute to past generations of sports cars that marked the automotive world. Will it be the new Mazda Miata?!
