Mercedes-Benz has stopped the development of gasoline and diesel engines. All resources and knowledge will now be directed only to electricity.
The future is electric! Judging by this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, however, this future is closer than you might think. The Daimler-Mercedes-Benz group is already among the leaders in the EV class, having electrified a large part of their fleet of cars rather quickly with its new EQ brand. In Frankfurt, we were able to see electric concepts ranging from the small A-Class, the V-Class van and also the S-Class electric concept. We were also surprised by the large number of hybrid drives that are available with all newer Mercedes-Benz models.
Daimler is currently coming to the market with the latest generation of engines with internal combustion throughout model range, these are the new six-cylinder engines for the E- and S-Class and engines for all-terrain vehicles. This generation of engines could also be the last.
According to the German magazine “Auto Motor und Sport”, Daimler (Mercedes) head of development Markus Schaefer said that they currently have no plans to further develop internal combustion engines and are focusing on new electric powertrains.
The future is electric. All manufacturers know this and so do we Daimler there is nothing special about this transition to development for electric drives only.
Daimler has already set itself the goal of having electric versions of all cars in its fleet available by 2022, so the news of the end of development of internal combustion engines is not so unexpected.
