The new Opel Astra: different in design with the aim of living in all the worlds of today's automotive world

The new Opel Astra therefore brings a pure electric drive, a plug-in hybrid and a classic internal combustion engine, thus summarizing the concept that was established some time ago by the new generation Opel Corsa. So an identical platform regardless of powertrain choice. At the same time, it brings an interesting and bold design, but still recognizable design characteristics of Opel models - from the last and past eras. She is interesting!

The new Opel Astra portfolio has something for everyone in terms of powertrain alternatives – so this is the first Opel model to offer buyers a choice between a pure electric drive, a plug-in hybrid or an internal combustion engine. The power range will range from 81 kW / 110 hp to 165 kW / 225 hp of system output power - this will ensure superior driving performance. Opel thus combines dynamism and driving fun with the highest efficiency and environmental awareness in the next generation of its bestseller in the compact class. At the usual attractive and especially affordable prices. The new Opel Astra will be available for as little as EUR 22,465 (recommended price including VAT in Germany).

"The new Opel Astra is unique - Opel defines a new era with it. This applies to the entire range of powertrains up to the battery-electric Astra-e, as well as to its leading technologies and sensational design. With this car, Opel is setting standards that have everything to make it a hit again." says Opel's new CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz.

This is also why it brings some Opel innovations from higher classes to the segment in which the Opel Astra wants to dominate with technologies.

A different and bold design

New Opel Astra is a design statement for the brand and follows the design trends of some models in the recent period, but the design is a bit more dynamic and actually bolder than ever before, with clean, taut surfaces, detoxified of superfluous elements and with a new face of the brand - the Opel Vizor . This shows at first sight that Astra is ready to define a new era and the face that the brand will show in the future.

Like its predecessor, presented in 2015, the newcomer to the compact class brings innovations that customers previously knew only from more expensive vehicles. For example, the Astra can turn night into day: the latest evolution of the adaptive Intelli-Lux LED® Pixel Light comes straight from the Opel Insignia and with 168 LED elements leads in the compact and mid-sized market sectors.

A time jump has also taken place inside the new generation Astra. With the fully digital Pure Panel, analog instruments are consigned to the drawer of history. Instead, a new human-machine interface (HMI) with fresh, modern graphics offers customers a clean, more intuitive experience. Passengers can intuitively operate the new Astra via extra-wide touchscreens, just like a smartphone. Opel's designers and engineers have taken great care to ensure that the driver receives all the necessary information and useful performance options, but is not burdened with redundant information or functions. In addition, you can still control key settings such as the climate control using the key settings and buttons.

As usual, Opel is also extremely careful when it comes to seating comfort in the new compact class model. The front seats are developed with our own knowledge and have AGR certificate ("Aktion Gesunder Rücken eV" / "Campaign for a healthy back") and are thus extremely ergonomic and comfortable, especially on long journeys. The driver is supported by state-of-the-art assistance systems, from the fully to semi-automated Intelli-Drive 2.0 assistance system, which combines on-board cameras and sensors with e-horizon connectivity, and the Intelli-Vision 360-degree camera.

The basics - done with excellence

The new Astra is 4374 millimeters long and 1860 mm wide. Thus, it is only 4.0 mm longer than the previous model. The wheelbase has increased by a whopping 13mm to 2675mm. Despite its muscular and confident stance, the new Astra's practical boot with adjustable floor still offers up to 1,250 liters of luggage space for the driver and four passengers with the rear seats folded down.

The new Astra is based on the third generation of the highly flexible EMP2 multi-energy architecture, with Opel DNA. This means that the handling is so dynamic and that the new model – just like every Opel – is nice to drive. In other words, high-speed performance was the primary development goal. So the location on the highways.

Steering and chassis lateral stiffness - suspension McPherson gripa front, torsion bar at the rear - both are designed to control high sway (damping movement around the horizontal axis). When braking, the new model delivers strong stopping power and remains very stable in corners and on a straight line. The torsional rigidity of the new Astra is 14 percent higher than that of the previous model.

Orders for the new Opel Astra will begin in the fall, and the first customers will be available from the beginning of 2022. It will initially be presented as a sporty five-door model, with the elegant station wagon version of the Astra Sports Tourer following shortly after. Only a year (which is in those days after the presentation of the new generation on the market) will completely join the line electric Astra-e.
