What happens when German precision meets the tuning scene and a thirst for adrenaline? The Opel Frontera GRAVEL is born – a four-wheeled announcement that electric SUVs are not just for shopping malls.
The production Opel Frontera, the latest member of the electrified SUV family from Rüsselsheim, promises a solid amount of practicality, space and German flair for everyday driving. But if you're looking for more than just a ride to and from school, here's a concept that will raise an eyebrow even among the most hardened petrolheads – the Opel Frontera GRAVEL.
It's a concept model based on the production electric Frontera, with added steroids in the form of 7x16-inch BORBET CWE off-road wheels, a winch, additional LED headlights, a Thule roof box and a design that would make even Mad Max jealous. The GRAVEL was created in collaboration with tuning experts BlackFish and XS – the latter is also hosting its public premiere at the XS Carnight Wörthersee on May 30th.
Technical data – hard electricity for soft ground
The Frontera Electric comes with an 83-kilowatt (113 hp) electric motor and a 44 kWh battery, which according to the WLTP standard allows for a range of up to 305 km. Energy consumption is a solid 18.2–18.5 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions – zero. Which means you can drive through the mud polygon with a pure eco-conscious feeling without pissing anyone off.
The GRAVEL configuration is all about “soft-roading.” With a low center of gravity, high torque, and a willingness to tackle gravel, rocks, and ruts, the GRAVEL is not an extreme off-roader, but it is significantly more prepared for “life off the asphalt” than the stock version.
Design: When you meet the desert on the highway
The exterior of the Opel Frontera GRAVEL is a real visual shock: a combination of matte black roof and bonnet, special “Desert Stone” foil, orange accents on the mirrors, bumpers, spoiler and Opel Blitz logo. In short, no one will mistake it for a rental SUV at the intersection.
Details like side tool boxes, a winch, and an additional lighting arsenal make it clear that the GRAVEL is made for adventurers. Or at least for those who wish they were.
Interior: Function meets color contrast
In the XS cabin, the specialists continue with the same philosophy: robust yet comfortable. Microfiber and orange stitching on the seats, a black headliner and a clearly expressed cabin character – here the driver is not protected from the world, but invited into it.
Conclusion: An SUV with an urban character and a gravel heart
The Opel Frontera GRAVEL is more than a new model – it is a statement. Electric SUVs don't have to be sterile. The GRAVEL breaks down stereotypes and proves that an e-car can look cool, be ready for adventure and be pollution-free at the same time.
For now, it's just a show car, but if the response is good (and with this design, it will be), we can expect a production version that will fill the void between overly urban crossovers and overly hardcore SUVs.
Price? If it goes into production, expect a bit more than a regular Frontera (which is expected to start around €28,000), but significantly less than a Land Rover Defender. In short – an interesting candidate for anyone who wants a little more… gravel in their life.
