The Oscars are the most famous and prestigious awards in Hollywood. More than 9,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will decide who will win the statuette at the 2019 Academy Awards this year. Like any other event of this kind, the Oscars incite heated debates, are full of controversies and contradictions. And not everyone necessarily wants to be a part of this show, even if they are nominated or even end up winning. In its 91-year history, some of Hollywood's finest - from Marlon Brando to Will Smith - have boycotted the awards, not accepting an award or a nomination at all. Who are the actors who refused the Oscars or boycotted the awards?
Award Oscars 2019 will take place February 24 in Los Angeles. There will certainly be no shortage of surprises this time either. So let's see who has already taken care of a minor 'scandal' so far, the award was boycotted or rejected by the prestigious statue?
Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando won an Oscar for his role as Vito Corleone in The Godfather. But he boycotted the Oscars in 1973, sending Sacheen Littlefeather, an American activist for the rights of Native Americans, to the awards. She came on stage, accepted his award, but when she read Marlon's speech about the abuse of Native Americans in movies, she was booed.
Roman Polanski
The director did not attend the Oscars in 2003, although he was awarded a golden statuette for best director for the film The Pianist. But even if he had tried to come, he probably wouldn't have succeeded, because he was still a fugitive on the run from the hand of justice (he had been convicted of illicit sex). Harrison Ford accepted the award on his behalf.
Michael Caine
Michael Caine would not be present at the award, which brought him his first Oscar for best actor in the film Hannah and her sisters. Instead, he filmed the movie Throat: Revenge, which has a rating of 2.9/10 on IMDB and 0 % on Rotten Tomatoes. Caine did not miss the award in 2000, when he was nominated for the best supporting role in the film House Order, and thus took home another golden statuette.
Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Taylor's husband at the time, Richard Burton (also nominated for his role in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), convinced the actress to skip the 1966 award. Burton had already lost four times and now feared a fifth defeat. Taylor won the Oscar for Best Actress, but she didn't want to thank the Academy for the golden statuette.
Woody Allen
The writer and filmmaker has never attended a film awards ceremony - not even in 1978, when Annie Hall was honored by the Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Woody attended the Change Awards in 2002 to showcase films made in honor of New York City after the 9/11 attacks. Allen said: “The whole concept of awards is stupid. If you accept when they say you deserve an award, you have to accept their judgment when they say you don't deserve an award.”
Paul Newman
After six nominations in acting categories and two honorary Oscars, Newman finally won an Oscar for The Color of Money. But he was not at the award ceremony. He told the AP: “It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years. Finally he gives in and you say, "I'm terribly sorry, but I'm tired."
Katharine Hepburn
With four golden statuettes, Hepburn still holds the record among actors with the most Oscars, although Meryl Streep is getting dangerously close to her. Katharine never came to the ceremony, although she did not refuse the awards. She first appeared at the Oscars in 1974 when she presented the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. "I am living proof that a person can wait 41 years to be selfless."
Banksy
Secrets The British artist values his anonymity. In 2011, his film Exit through the gift shop was nominated in the documentary category. But Banksy was not allowed to attend the award with a mask.
Alice Brady
Brady won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1938 for In Old Chicago. As Alice was not present at the award ceremony, a man came on stage and accepted the award on her behalf (a plaque, as supporting roles did not have a statuette until 1944). It turns out that the man was a con artist who stole the pad. It was never found, nor was the plaque, and Brady was awarded a replacement by the Academy.
George C. Scott
Scott turned down his Best Actor nomination for 1970's Patton and let the Academy know he would also turn down the award if he happened to win. Despite this, he won the golden statuette, and the Oscars are said to be a "two-hour meat parade". What would I say today, as the "meat parade" often exceeds 4 hours?
Will Smith
In 2016, Will Smith, despite being nominated for his role in Winner's Walk, vowed not to attend the Oscars due to the lack of diversity. For the second year in a row, all 20 nominees were white. Smith told Good Morning America: “We're part of this community. But at this point, we're embarrassed to stand there and say, 'That's totally fine.'" This wasn't his first awards boycott: He boycotted the Grammys in 1989 when he learned the announcement of Best Rap Performance wouldn't be televised. .
Terrence Malick
The legendary director never attended the Oscars. Before The Thin Red Line was released, the film's producers revealed too much information about working with Malick in an interview with Vanity Fair, even though they had signed a non-disclosure agreement before filming. Malick received his first nomination for director, but did not attend the awards ceremony, as the producers who released him were supposed to be there. In the end, there were no producers, and the film The Thin Red Line did not win any Oscars. Malick was also not present at the award in 2012, when he was nominated for the film The Tree of Life.
Eminem
When Eminem won the Academy Award for Best Original Song (Lose Yourself) for the movie 8 Mile, he was not at the ceremony. His co-author Luis Resto accepted the award. Eminem is said to have slept while being announced as the winner. In an interview, he said he missed the award because he didn't believe he had any chance of winning.
Stanley Kubrick
Kubrick never won an Academy Award for Best Director. In 1969, his film 2001: A Space Odyssey won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Kubrick was not present at the award ceremony, the award was accepted by Diahann Caroll and Burt Lancaster and it was rumored that Kubrick was in Mas, where he was looking for a new location for the continuation of the film.
