The nominations for the 2021 Oscars are already out, which means speculation and predictions about the winners are in full swing! Who the Academy will announce as the best this year will be unknown until the end, but if you ask the audience, the winner is already known.
OnBuy.com looked at ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, two of the largest movie rating and review platforms, and calculated which movies and actors audiences would most likely give the prestigious statuette to.
Oscars 2021: The best film according to the audience
The competition for best film this year is particularly strong. Nomadland, Netflix's The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Mank are highly regarded here, followed by Minari, The Father, Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal. And the nominee Judas and the Black Messiah is the obvious choice of most viewers! The 1960s drama about Fred Hampton and the Black Panthers stars Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield and has an average rating of 89.3 out of 100! The next best film, according to the audience, is The Father, starring the legendary Anthony Hopkins.
The 2021 Oscars have already made history with almost 9 non-white nominees, as well as nominations in the Best Director category. For the first time in 93 years, the Academy nominated two women – Emerald Fennell (for the brilliant Promising Young Woman and Chloe Zhao, who continues to win awards for Nomadland). The audience would put the golden statuette in their hands for directing Lee Isaac Chung for directing Minari. Chung's film follows a Korean-American family who immigrate to a farm in Arkansas, USA, to find a new start and that classic American dream. But when an eccentric grandmother returns to their lives, they realize that what they envisioned will not be so easy to carry out.
Actors and actresses who impressed the audience
Minari could also celebrate with an Oscar for Steven Yeun in the category of best actor. He is competing for the Oscar with Anthony Hopkins, Riz Ahmed, Gary Oldman and Chadwick Boseman. Although the top honor in the acting category was announced for the late Boseman and his excellent performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, the audience chose the favorite in this category Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins plays an elderly man who rejects any help from his daughter. Because of the changes he faces, he begins to question his neighbors, his own mind, and the reality he lives in.
The critics' favorite in the Best Actress category is certainly Frances McDormand in the moving Nomadland, as well as Viola Davis in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. But according to the audience, she deserves the Oscar for best actress Carey Mulligan for a role in the film The Promising Young Woman. Her role as a woman who takes revenge for trauma and sexual violence impressed viewers.
She could step onto the winners' stage this year as well Olivia Colman, which, according to the general public, may deserve an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (The Father). He can expect the most in the Best Supporting Actor category Daniel Kaluuya, who won a Golden Globe earlier this year for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah. Many film critics on foreign portals agree that Paul Racio's performance in the film Sound of Metal is the best this year.
