The center of Trieste is located around the Great Square (Piazza Unita), which is famous as the largest European square with an open view of the sea. The closest to it is the Audace pier, which is a kind of city salon, as it is a popular promenade for Trža residents of all ages.
At sunset, it seems as if it would Pier Audace wanted to embrace the last rays of the sun. The city embankment is the best place to start our walk. The route takes us past the Great Square, where all the most important city institutions are located, and the city tourist office is also nearby. Today's pulse of the once strategically important city can also be felt on the Stock Exchange, which is in the immediate vicinity of the Great Square. There are shops for all tastes, but of course the most famous cafes are where tourists can enjoy a good cup of coffee or a capo, which is an abbreviation for cappuccino, which is served in a small cup in Trieste, when ordering a cappuccino, as we are used to. but the word grande must be added. It is known that the whole of Trieste smells of coffee. What's more, the people of Trieste are convinced that they have the best coffee in the world. Is that true? According to historical sources, Trieste already had an important place in the coffee trade in Austro-Hungarian times. Even today, most of it is processed by domestic processors and traders. There are dozens of well-known entrepreneurs, and you've probably already heard of them Hausbrandt, Crem Caffe and above all Illy, who achieved perhaps the highest quality with his mixes. The city also boasts many classic cafes, which are a kind of cultural meeting place, as they present various books, hold press conferences and the like. One such bar is Caffe Tommaseo near Borzne trg. Among other things, they will serve you a lunch, which they call a fast lunch, for ten euros. For the hungry, we also recommend the restaurant La Piola, where they have very tasty seasonal food and moderate prices (from 20 to 25 euros). You can find it near the Great Square.
APERITIV MOMENT
Considering that Trieste, in contrast to major European capitals such as Milan, London, Barcelona or Berlin, is not exactly a paradise on earth for night owls, there are many bars scattered throughout the city center that offer a variety of aperitifs around seven o'clock in the evening . They are something special and almost necessary in Trieste. After a full day's work, young people like to meet their friends in the evening over a glass of good wine or other, more exotic aperitifs. It is especially pleasant in these spring and summer months, when visitors can sit outside and those who cannot give up smoking cigarettes can also smoke outside - remember that in Italy since the beginning of this year smoking has been strictly prohibited in all public places bars and restaurants. You won't believe it, but the legal order is strictly followed by everyone. The choice of good bars is varied, and currently the most popular are Circus and Dantealdue, an elegant bar where you can try excellent San Daniele prosciutto with a glass of good Friulian wine. In the summer months, Trieste life moves to Barkovlje (Barcola) - on the coastal strip, where the people of Trieste bask in the sun's rays from April to September. There is no shortage of bars in this part of the city, Swimm, a bar at the end of the pine grove in Barkovlje, should be highlighted. The friendly owners will spoil you with a variety of cocktails, while at the same time you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Gradeška lagoon.
FUN
Trieste also offers a lot of entertainment, but with one exception. Given that the city is known for its large percentage of elderly people, it often happens that the program of events is tailored to their needs. However, something is moving in this area and it seems that some influential people have finally realized that young people also live in Trieste. Certainly at this moment there is the greatest expectation for the Duran Duran concert, which will take place on Veliki trg on Tuesday, June 21, at 9 p.m. For sports enthusiasts, let's say that this year's traditional sailing tour, which consists of a month-long sailing around the Italian boot, will start in Trieste on June 25. Otherwise, this sailing event cannot compete with the Trieste regatta of all regattas, Barcolano, but the events in the city will also be very lively during it, as it will be accompanied by a sailing party, as is customary. On the eve of the start, June 24, the spectators will be entertained by various musical groups on Veliki trg. To make your visit to Trieste complete, spice it up with a walk among sights such as Miramar Castle or Devino Castle (open to the public since last summer). The city in the bay, as Trieste writer Boris Pahor named it in the literary work of the same name, hides a rich past and culture.
