40 years of the BMW Art Car collection – when BMW becomes a painting canvas

It all started in 1975 when Alexander Calder did something unheard of. At the request of racer and art lover Herve Poulain, he painted the BMW 3.0 CSL model that competed in the 24-hour Le Mans race. With this, he began to write a very special chapter in BMW history, as the 3.0 CSL is considered the first car of the BMW Art Car collection, which still fascinates art and car lovers 40 years later. On this occasion, BMW collected all 17 such cars in a pile, which are the work of 16 artists who walked the Caldera route. Among them is Andy Warhol.

Low, long and aerodynamic - three necessary features for a drag bike, a motorcycle for acceleration competitions. All three can be found on the Sprintbeemer assembled at Lucky Cat Garage. The French team built it around a modified BMW R50/2 engine chassis and is powered by BMW's R100RS reciprocating engine. They drank it all the way at Edelweiss Motorsport, and added a nitro (NOS) drive for a little more flight.

With the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage concept study, the Bavarians pay homage to their famous predecessor from the 70s. In the case of the modern version of the CSL, which stands for "Coupé Sport Leichtbau" or "coupe, sport and light construction", the latter features are the justification instead of aluminum - together with the Plexiglas, it reduced the weight of the original model by around 200 kg compared to version 3.0 CS - used carbon fiber.
