Photo: envato

Some of the "gadgets" of recent decades are making a big comeback. We took a closer look at the reincarnations in the form of new releases with the inclusion of modern functionalities. It is definitely retro and! Polaroid cameras, projectors, Walkmans, turntables and flip phones are thus making a comeback. We checked the best lists.

Are you ready for tech hype 2.0? Similar to fashion, this decade in the field of technology is characterized by big comebacks, already written off. While we can hardly get rid of innovative new products these days, we simply can't get some gadgets out of our heads. We are bound by a fond nostalgia for them. Whether it's a Polaroid camera, Walkman player, projector, flip phone or record player – our favorites from decades past are celebrating a major revival, not only evoking nostalgia but also providing exciting new discoveries thanks to modern features.

Polaroid camera

Thanks to smartphones and digital cameras, capturing memories isn't a problem these days. A quick click and hundreds of images are transferred to our digital albums and clouds. But if you prefer to capture special moments in analog form, you can still use instant cameras, which capture moments in a unique and unchanging way. The first instant camera was developed by Edwin Herbert Land in 1947 and brought to market by his company Polaroid. In the 1970s and 1980s, the digital boom at the start of the new millennium brought the era to an abrupt end, and many manufacturers simply went out of business.

Today, the "Polaroid camera" is making a comeback, but technically it has nothing in common with its predecessors. While the image was still chemically created in the old models, today's manufacturers rely on modern thermal printing processes with a built-in printer and no toxic chemicals. Although the iconic shaking of a freshly printed Polaroid is no longer necessary, white-framed images can evoke just as good feelings. The Polaroid Go Instant is currently the world's smallest analog instant camera. Ideal for use anytime at home or on the go. We also present you some other really good choices.

Projectors for everyone

The first system for projecting electronic image information was developed in 1939 by Swiss engineer Dr. Invented by Fritz Fischer. Since then, the projector has had an interesting career. Be it in the cinema or privately: from now on, projecting images can be an integral part of our everyday life. While in the last few decades the enjoyment of movies was mainly dominated by TV sets, the projector is gradually returning to our living rooms. And thus changes their image.

At just 830 grams, Samsung's “The Freestyle” projector is a breeze and doesn't just offer much in terms of projection. Of course, he has versatile talents and is also a speaker. Thanks to the smart home function, Ambient Lighting provides atmospheric lighting effects and the feeling of a real home cinema. Another advantage compared to many previous models: the Freestyle base can be rotated up to 180 degrees, allowing video projections from a wide variety of positions - on a table or floor, on walls or even on the ceiling - without whitewash. if a smooth surface or screen is absolutely necessary, it is enabled. To provide power, the Samsung projector is compatible with external power adapters or can be charged via a power adapter.

Walkman for audiophiles

In 1979, Sony sold the first Walkman and the era of portable music listening was born. According to the story, the founder of Sony - Masaru Ibuka felt the need to listen to music on his travels, so the designers developed the TC-D 5 recorder, which weighs almost two kilograms. Unthinkable today in the age of smartphones and multi-platform playlists. Now Sony has relaunched the Walkman. With the new models, Sony promises a "high-resolution audio experience" that "must not only be heard, but also noticeable". In concrete terms, this means: aluminum or copper frames, capacitors to suppress interference, and a WLAN connection for streaming. Whether other manufacturers will also jump on the retro wave remains to be seen. It is clear that the new Walkman will only be available from Sony, as the term is protected and can only be used by Sony.

Gramophones

It all started in 1887, when Emil Berliner, the inventor of the record and gramophone, registered his patent. What followed were many years of warm sounds and the typical crackle of a needle on a vinyl record. Until the mid-1960s, the king of sound carriers was an integral part of every living room, before it was almost completely supplanted first by the cassette and later by the compact disc (CD). Lovers of good sound and personalities from the music world (especially DJs!) remained loyal to it until 2017, when the sales share of vinyl records hovered around five percent again. This makes the record the only physical audio medium of the modern era that can once again record sales growth after cassettes and CDs. The Dual DT 500 USB turntable impresses not only with its high-quality exterior, stable aluminum Audio-Technica turntable, but above all with its integrated preamplifier and practical USB connection for digitizing your favorite vinyl records. The built-in switchable phono preamplifier allows you to conveniently connect the player to any phono or auxiliary input, connecting it to your existing home sound system. Price: 350 euros.

Switch phones

Folding phones are back in fashion and have nothing in common with the clunky flip phones of the past. While old models usually consisted of two separate parts connected only by screws, today's devices usually have the entire touchscreen folded once in the middle. So the smartphone is close at hand without sacrificing screen size. According to Samsung, the Flip 3 can be folded up to 200,000 times without damage. Another advantage: the IPX8 certification, which makes the foldable device waterproof and therefore even more suitable for everyday use.
