The Tesla Model 3 is the most popular electric car in the world and its extremely good global sales support this claim.
We recently came across a tweet from vocal Tesla fan and investor Sawyer Merritt.
NEWS: According to that @lovecarindustry, Tesla Model 3 was the 8th best selling car globally in 2021, & is expected to enter the top 5 later in 2022 & outsell the Ford F-150.

Not only was the Tesla Model 3 the eighth best-selling car in the world for 2021, but Tesla's entry-level electric sedan is expected to climb higher than fifth place later this year. Merritt's tweet also predicted that the Tesla Model 3 might even outsell the Ford F-150 in 2022. Meanwhile, based on data provided by Merritt, the Model Y ranked as high as 19th among the world's best-selling cars in 2021, even as sales of the electric crossover were disrupted by supply chains. In the tweet, he adds that the Model Y should surpass the Model 3 by the end of 2022, and that both cars will rank among the top five in terms of global sales. This is a bold claim, but we can still believe it, because Tesla has been making really big strides in recent times.
I made it! The most accurate and detailed global ranking by models. Thanks to the support of many of you, I was able to gather data for 106 markets around the world, accounting for more than 99% of the global's total. Full ranking here: https://t.co/LtGGdQtofD pic.twitter.com/w4CKC4OHPk

The table shows that according to the data, the Model 3 actually appears in ninth place in 2021, and thus has grown considerably compared to 2020, when it occupied the 21st place. If the numbers are correct, Tesla has sold more than 500,000 Model 3 sedans in 2021, a 40 percent year-over-year increase. Meanwhile, Ford is expected to sell 562,000 F-150 trucks, down 8 percent from a year earlier.
According to the data, Model Y is in 19th place. In 2020, the Tesla Y is said to be in 262nd place, even though Tesla didn't start selling it until March 2020, right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It should be noted that Tesla does not officially report sales by model in all markets. However, since 2021 is more than half a year away, the registration data should be available to verify the accuracy of this data. As for the Model 3 and Model Y, which are moving up the list and surpassing flagships like the Ford F-150, there's no way to know for sure how 2022 will end. Fuel prices and energy costs are definitely helping sales.
But we can say with certainty that Tesla will have at least one model in the top three by the end of the year. And definitely two in the top ten. This will be a true herald of changes in the car market and a clear sign of where the industry is going.
