When it comes to the Dutch, innovation and quality of life are high on the list of imperatives, so it's no surprise that it was there, in the city of Oss, that they introduced the first smart road with illuminated lane markers. So the future will be brighter and much safer.
Dutch engineering company Hijmans and technological artist Daan Roosegaarde have joined forces in a unique project that aims to improve road visibility through more energy-efficient methods than conventional public lighting. The city of Oss is thus the first that can boast of luminous signs on the road, and the technological innovation is already spreading to other parts of the Netherlands.
The smart highway works on the basis of photoluminescent paint, which is supplied with energy during the day and slowly emits light for eight hours during the night. Glowing road lines are just one of the projects that the Netherlands plans to implement in its vision to improve road safety. In the month of November, the Roosegaarde studio plans to open a light-up bike path inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night. The historic bicycle route will thus take on a completely new meaning in the town of Nuenen, where Van Gogh lived and worked for a while. China and Japan have somehow already expressed interest in a smart road.
