Tom after exhausting years on the western front returns to Australia and takes over the office lighthouse keeper on the island of Janus Rock, which is more than half a day's sail away from the mainland, and where a supply boat comes only once a year. He also takes his loving wife to the island. Two years later, after two miscarriages and a stillbirth, a grieving Isabel he hears the cry of a child in the wind. The husband wants to report the finding of the baby, while Isabel insists that it is a baby a gift from God. Tom relents and they name the baby Lucy. But this is where the story begins.
