10. No Country for Old Men (2007)

This is definitely not a movie for everyone, but if you give it a chance, we guarantee you won't be left indifferent. The shortest description of the atmosphere could be "creepy", but that doesn't say enough about everything that awaits you. Excellent performances by Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem, and stories about drugs, crime and a relentless killer with a very interesting weapon.

9. Nader and Simin separate (A Separation, 2011)

Maybe you weren't expecting an Iranian movie, but ignore the country of origin and give it a chance. You will get two hours of very high quality film program. It is not easy, but with it you will experience difficult questions and situations that only the top seventh art can present. In this case, a married couple wonders whether they should emigrate from Iran so that their child can have a better life, or stay to care for a parent who has Alzheimer's disease.

8. Yi Yi (Yi Yi: A One and a Two, 2000)

Now we go to Taiwan, where the Cannes-winning drama awaits us. It is a complex story about how all members of one family try to reconcile past and present connections and relationships with everyday life, each in their own way.

7. The Tree of Life (2011)

Many of Terence Malik's films have met with mixed reviews upon release, and this is especially true, with some calling it the best and others calling it the worst movie ever made. When watching it, it is important to try to forget about standard film frames and typical stories and be open to experiment, which you may end up liking.

6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

It's a love story, but it's not a romantic comedy by any means. One couple decides to medically erase each other's memories so that this bad relationship can finally end. However, it seems to them more and more that they were mistaken and that everything is not so simple and definitive. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey in the lead roles bring a melancholy but unforgettable story.

5. Boyhood (2014)

What sets this movie apart from other coming-of-age dramas is also because it was shot over a period of 12 years. So you can really see the imprint of time. The main character, i.e. the main actor, grows up in front of the camera. A truly interesting feat that earned the film various nominations, and Patricia Arquette won an Oscar for her performance.

4. Spirited Away (2001)

The animated films behind creator Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Gibli tackle so many different age-appropriate themes in one way that it's no wonder most of them have extremely high ratings and all the recommendations from fans and critics alike. In this film, a ten-year-old girl moves to a new neighborhood full of strange creatures and tries to find her place among them.

3. There Will Be Blood (2007)

An epic story about family, faith, money, power and all that in the oil business at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Set in California, the setting is charmingly masterful, and the roles are extraordinary. Daniel Day-Lewis won his second Oscar for his role, and it was well deserved.

2. In the Mood for Love (2000)

The Korean drama is deservedly on many recommendation lists and has received extremely good reviews. The story follows two neighbors who suspect that their spouses are cheating on them, but still decide to keep the relationship on a platonic level. The slow pace helps to build up the atmosphere and create tension in the audience, just like the one felt by the main characters.

1. Mulholland Drive, 2001

It's hard to accurately describe this film without going into too much detail, but it's a surreal neo noir mystery about a girl who comes to Hollywood with big dreams, loses her memory and tries to figure out what's behind it. The boundaries between reality and fantasy are somewhat blurred, and viewers wonder if they are watching a tragic love story, entering the psyche of an unstable person, or a metaphor for how Hollywood swallows everything...
