Apple has finally offered a watch that even serious athletes will wear. So a sports smart watch.
Apple today introduced the Apple Watch Ultra, which brings a bold new design and a wide range of features specially designed for endurance, exploration and adventure. The Apple Watch Ultra features a 49mm titanium body and a flat sapphire front glass that reveals the largest and brightest Apple Watch display ever. A flexible action button offers instant access to many useful functions. The Apple Watch Ultra also has the best battery life of any Apple Watch, reaching up to 36 hours during normal use. In addition, a new low power setting, ideal for multi-day trips, can extend battery life by up to 60 hours. The Wayfinder watch face is designed specifically for the larger screen of the Apple Watch Ultra and includes a compass built into the watch face. Apple Watch Ultra also introduces three new bands – Trail Loop, Alpine Loop and Ocean Band – that offer unique design features that ensure a secure and comfortable fit for any adventure.

Bigger, brighter and stronger
Made from aerospace-grade titanium, the Apple Watch Ultra provides the perfect balance of weight, durability and corrosion resistance. The case rises to surround all edges of the flat sapphire crystal front, protecting the Retina display, which is up to 2,000 nits bright, or 2x brighter than any Apple Watch display to date. The new high-contrast orange action button is easy to customize for instant access to a variety of features, including workouts, compass waypoints, backtracking and more.
Apple Watch Ultra has three built-in microphones to significantly improve the sound quality of voice calls in all conditions. An adaptive beamforming algorithm uses microphones to capture voice while reducing ambient background noise, resulting in exceptional clarity. In challenging windy environments, Apple Watch Ultra uses advanced wind noise reduction algorithms, including machine learning, to deliver clear and intelligible audio for calls.

Designed specifically for endurance athletes and runners, the Trail Loop is the thinnest Apple Watch band ever. The lightweight woven textile is soft and flexible for an optimal fit, and the convenient tab is designed for quick and easy adjustment.
With explorers in mind, the Alpine Loop tape has two integrated layers made from one continuous weaving process that eliminates the need for sewing. Top loops woven with high tenacity yarn provide adjustability and a secure fit for the titanium G-hook.
The Ocean Band is designed specifically for extreme water sports and recreational diving with a titanium buckle and matching spring loop. Made from flexible fluoroelastomer, it stretches and uses tubular geometry for a secure fit. The Ocean Band also has an optional extra-long tail that allows users to comfortably wear it over a wetsuit.
Endurance sports and elite athletes
With a larger, brighter display and rugged design, the Apple Watch Ultra is the perfect tech tool for adventurers and explorers in a variety of environments, from everyday to extreme. The completely redesigned Compass app in watchOS 9 offers more in-depth information and three different views. The app displays a new hybrid view that shows the analog compass dial and the digital view at the same time. Turning the Digital Crown displays an additional view that includes latitude, longitude, elevation, and slope, as well as an orientation view that shows compass waypoints and the return route. Compass Waypoints is a quick and convenient way to mark a location or point of interest right in the app. Pressing the action button or tapping the Compass Waypoint icon drops a waypoint that can be edited by tapping the icon that appears. The Compass Waypoint plot dynamically updates in real time with both the waypoint direction and approximate distance.
Photo: AppleBacktrack uses GPS data to create a route that shows where the user has been, which is useful if they get lost or disoriented and need help retracing their steps. It can also automatically turn on in the background when offline. With a single press of the Action button, users can quickly launch Compass Waypoint or start or view Backtrack. The 86 decibel siren is designed for emergencies if users are lost or injured and can help alert the location. The unique sound signature includes two distinct alternating patterns that can repeat for up to several hours. The first pattern indicates distress, while the second mimics the widely recognized SOS pattern.

The operating temperature on the wrist has been designed to help explore the most extreme and remote locations, from the freezing cold mountains at -20°C to the scorching desert heat at 55°C. The Apple Watch Ultra is MIL-STD-810H certified, which used for military equipment and is popular among rugged equipment manufacturers. Apple Watch Ultra is also EN 13319 certified, which is an internationally recognized standard for diving accessories, including depth gauges, relied on by recreational divers around the world. Using the new depth sensor, the Apple Watch Ultra has a Depth app designed with an intuitive user interface. The Depth app shows the time, current depth, water temperature, duration underwater and maximum depth reached at a glance. Users can program the Action button to launch the Depth application immediately.
In collaboration with Huish Outdoors, a company known for providing innovative and reliable equipment for recreational diving, the new Oceanic+ app turns the Apple Watch Ultra into a powerful dive computer. The app, which will be available later this fall, implements Bühlmann's decompression algorithm and includes dive planning, easy-to-read dive measurements, visual and haptic alerts, no-decompression limit, ascent rate and safety stop guidance. Oceanic+ also offers a personalized user profile, reports on current and local dive conditions, and a dive log that can be shared with family and friends and automatically syncs to your iPhone. Many additional features
Apple Watch Ultra includes all the connectivity, activity and health features that have made the Apple Watch the world's best-selling smartwatch – from heart rate monitoring and ECG and blood oxygen apps to activity and mindfulness rings, along with additional health, safety and navigation functions. Apple Watch Ultra has new innovative temperature sensing capabilities. The unique design with two sensors reduces the bias of the external environment and the body itself. Using the new capabilities, female users can receive retrospective ovulation estimates, which can be helpful in family planning. Sensing the temperature also allows improved prediction of menstruation. With iOS 16 and watchOS 9, Cycle Tracking users can now receive a notification if their recorded cycle history shows a potential deviation that could be a symptom of underlying health issues.
Using two new motion sensors and an advanced sensor fusion algorithm, Apple Watch can detect a serious traffic accident with Crash Detection. When the Apple Watch detects a serious traffic accident, the device will report to the user and call emergency services if there is no response after a 10-second countdown. Emergency responders will receive the location of the user's device, which is also shared with emergency contacts.
Apple Watch Ultra and the environment
Apple Watch Ultra is designed to reduce environmental impact. It features recycled gold in the coating of several printed circuit boards – a first for the Apple Watch – as well as 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100% recycled tungsten in the Taptic system. The display glass is arsenic-free, and the Apple Watch Ultra is mercury-free, BFR-free, PVC-free and beryllium-free. None of the Apple Watch packaging uses an outer plastic wrap, and 98 percent or more of the packaging is fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely eliminating plastic from its packaging by 2025.
Today, Apple is carbon neutral for its global corporate operations, and by 2030, it plans to be 100 percent carbon neutral across its entire manufacturing supply chain and all product life cycles. This means that every Apple device sold, from component manufacturing, assembly, transportation, customer use, charging, all the way to recycling and material recovery, will have a net zero impact on the climate.
What about the price?! Apple Watch Ultra costs $799 in the US. There is no data for Europe at the time of writing.
