If you've ever wanted to drive the legendary G-Class but hit a wall when you saw the price tag, we've got good news. Mercedes is preparing something smaller, cuter, and – we hope – more affordable - the Mercedes-Benz Baby G.

The legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class, known for its boxy shape, military origins and (too) high price, is preparing for reincarnation in the form of an urban off-roader nicknamed the “Mercedes-Benz Baby G” or “Little G”. No, this is not a Kinder Egg toy, but an officially confirmed project that is expected to hit the roads by 2027. Mercedes is thus expanding the G family and lowering the threshold for entry into the world of brutal chic on four wheels.

The “Baby G” or “Little G” project was officially confirmed by Mercedes-Benz in September 2023, during the IAA Mobility salon in Munich. At that time it is CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Källenius, in an interview for the German Automobile Week revealed that the company is developing a new, more compact version of the legendary G-Class.

Further details about the model were revealed in early 2025, confirming that the project is actively progressing as part of Mercedes' broader model line-up renewal strategy, which includes 36 new or redesigned models by 2027 – of which 17 electric (BEV) and 19 with internal combustion engines (ICE).

How big (or small) will the “little G” be? Mercedes-Benz Baby G

According to the first renders (we also produce them internally) and statements from executives at Mercedes-Benz The new Baby G will be faithful to the original G-Class from 1979 – that means a short wheelbase, pronounced bumpers, high ground clearance and retro-futuristic charm. But don't let the word "baby" fool you – this little one will be bigger than Suzuki Jimny and will compete with vehicles such as the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco and even Jeep CompassWhich means: big enough for adventures, but compact enough for city cafes and narrow parking spaces.

Electricity in the box

Although Mercedes has not yet confirmed all the technical details, it seems that the Baby G will be electric. It will be based on the new modular MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, which allows for 800-volt fast charging and a range of around 480 km (300 miles). There is also talk of a mild-hybrid petrol version with a 48-volt system, but most sources predict that the “little G” will be purely EV, which would simplify production and costs for Mercedes.

Interior: luxury on a boxed diet

The cabin is expected to share many elements with the refreshed G-Class – expect the dual-screen MBUX infotainment system, the new MB.OS operating platform, quality materials and boxy yet modern ergonomics. Mercedes is targeting younger, urban buyers who want the “G look” but not necessarily its off-road capabilities.

Character for a reason: still off-road?

The question hanging in the air: will the Baby G be capable of real off-road? The chassis design has yet to be confirmed – some are hinting at unibody construction (which means better feel on the road, worse in the mud), others believe in a scaled-down version of the classic G-Class body-on-frame structure. But with its clearly exposed ground clearance and short overhangs, there remains hope that the “little G” will be more than just a fashion accessory.

Price: a dream you can afford?/

The most beautiful music to the ears of the average mortal – the price. The starting price is expected to be around 55,000 to 65,000 dollars (about 51,000 to 60,000 euros), which is almost half the price of the G 550 (140,000 $) and an even bigger cut than the AMG G 63 (179,000 $). With this, Mercedes is targeting buyers who dream of the G-Class, but live in the real world. In the market, it will compete with the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler and other boutique SUVs, but with significantly more stars on the hood.

Conclusion: Get ready for “G-fever” – this time in mini size

Mercedes-Benz Baby G is more than just hype – it’s a smart strategic move that democratizes an exclusive brand. With a price that won’t cause a heart attack and a design that retains the G-DNA despite its smaller dimensions, the Baby G could become a hit with urban adventurers, younger buyers and those who want a statement car without the need for a life loan.

Of course, there are still a few unknowns – the chassis, the exact specs, the level of off-road capability – but if Mercedes manages to balance performance, luxury and price just right, we can expect a new G-legend. Who says luxury has to be big? Sometimes it’s enough to just be to see big.
