An old shepherd spends the autumn of his life in a quiet medieval village, hidden high in the Calabrian mountains in the south of Italy. He grazes a flock of sheep in the meadows that most of the villagers have long since abandoned. His health no longer serves him, but he believes in the healing power of the elixir, which he prepares every day from water and dust from the church floor. Then a baby goat is born. We follow his uncertain first steps, his first game, his first graze. A majestic fir tree sways in the mountain wind and changes, slowly, through the passing of the seasons. He is now lying on the floor. All that remains of the tree is a skeleton, which will become charcoal, as it has done for some. Our view is obscured by smoke and ash.
