BYD Sealion 08 SUV 2026: The 643-horsepower Chinese sea lion devours German kings for breakfast

An electric titan with a range of 900 km that redefines the concept of "family car"

When the Chinese say "flagship", it no longer means a little Cherry that imitates a 2008 BMW. It means a 5.1-meter-long electric SUV - the BYD Sealion 08 SUV, which sprints to 100 km/h in just under five seconds - and charges faster than you can order a cappuccino.

Let me tell you something uncomfortable. While we in Europe are arguing about whether or not we should consider banning internal combustion engines by 2035, BYD has just unveiled something in Beijing that would make any engineer from Stuttgart seriously question whether they have chosen the right path in life.

His name is BYD Sealion 08 SUV. And no, you shouldn't confuse it with the Sealion 8 – which is already on the market, is smaller, and is a plug-in hybrid. It doesn't have a zero. That's the one with zero, which in BYD's internal logic apparently means: "this time we're really serious."

When a Chinese marine mammal meets a Mercedes GLS

Let's start with the numbers, because that's where the interesting stuff is. BYD Sealion 08 SUV measure 5115 mm in length, 1999 mm in width and 1800 mm in height, and the wheelbase is round 3030mm. For comparison – this is just 92 mm shorter than the Mercedes-Benz GLSLet that sink into your consciousness for a moment. A Chinese car that you can afford for half the price of its German rival is on par with the most expensive Mercedes SUV in terms of dimensions.

The interior is available in two configurations – five or six seats, arranged in three rows. According to information from the opening fair in Beijing, adults can sit comfortably in the third row, which is a welcome novelty in a class where the third row is usually reserved for children or punishment.

“The longest headlight light pattern in the industry” – this is how BYD boasts about the rear lights, which with their two-meter "tide gradient" design They illuminate the back of the car. Do we need that? No. Does it look fantastic? Probably.

A drive that will make your gas station attendant in the garage feel uneasy

This is where things get serious. Underneath the bodywork is a dual-engine four-wheel drive, which produces 480 kW or 643 hp (634 hp)The combined force of this Chinese leviathan knows Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is completed in around 4.9 seconds – which is a kind of paradox when you consider that it's a vehicle that can fit six people, a week's worth of luggage, and a dog.

Yes, you read that right. A family SUV that has a hundred BMW M3s locked in its rearview mirror.

The main star: the new generation battery

BYD has not yet officially confirmed the battery capacity, but analysts expect it to be 130.5 kWh LFP pack – the so-called second-generation Blade Battery. Sealion 08 stands on 800-volt architectures, which in practice means only one thing: speed matters.

Range on a single charge is up to 900 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycleYes, CLTC is more battery-friendly than the European WLTP, but even if we subtract a realistic 25–30 percent, we are talking about a vehicle that can go from Ljubljana to Berlin. without charging...Probably all the way to Hamburg, if you don't push too hard.

And now the best part. With BYD's “flash charging” technology, the battery can be from 10 % to 97 % recharge in nine minutes. Nine. Minutes. As much time as you spend waiting in a restaurant for the waiter to bring you water that you could have ordered twice.

Technology: When the Chinese overtake the German chassis masters

BYD Sealion 08 SUV is not just a battery on wheels with a nice body. Underneath it is hidden DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension with road preview functionThis is a system that uses a front camera to read the road ahead and adjusts the suspension before the bike hits a bumpThis kind of technology was previously only available in the Mercedes S-Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost. Now you can get it in a Chinese SUV.

Add more rear-wheel steering for easier parking (at five meters in length this is not a luxury, but a necessity), LiDAR sensor on the roof, which supplies God's Eye B (DiPilot 300) driving assistance system, and you get a car that technologically surpasses many European competitors for twice the price.

Key features of BYD Sealion 08 SUV

  • Dimensions: 5115 / 1999 / 1800mm

A heritage that practically didn't exist here – until yesterday

BYD used to make batteries for phones. You had a cell phone, and you might have had a BYD inside without knowing it. Today, BYD the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, which delivered in the first quarter of 2026 688,939 vehicles globallyEven more interesting: more than 50% of % sales went to export markets.

The Ocean Series, to which the BYD Sealion 08 SUV belongs, is BYD's most modern family of cars - a series that has grown from small hatchbacks (the Dolphin) to this five-meter leviathan. The Sealion 08 is their flagship. Highest in the hierarchy. Fireworks at the top of the tour.

And if we are all surprised that this is happening... under the BYD brand and not under the premium sub-brand Denza, the answer is simple: BYD can afford to sell its top models under the main brand because no one calls it a "Chinese junk" anymore.

Price: This is where it gets awkward for competition

China price BYD Sealion 08 SUV analysts expected it to be around 300,000 yuan, which is about 43,950 US dollars (just under 40,000 euros). Some industry sources even talk about an entry price of around 210,000–230,000 yuan (approximately 28,000–30,000 euros) for basic versions.

For 5.1-meter-long, 643-hp electric SUV with a 900-km range, air suspension and LiDAR.

Let that sink in again. The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic has 400 kW (536 hp) and it costs more than 130,000 US dollars. Sealion 08 has 480 kW (643 hp) and will cost less than a third of that in China.

Conclusion: China is playing for real – and not just with price anymore

There are caveats, of course. The Sealion 08 is not yet confirmed for the European market, although BYD clearly talks about “global ambitions”. CLTC ranges will drop in the real world (probably to around 650-700 km according to WLTP). Prices outside of China will certainly higher because of taxes, duties and European margins. And still no one knows how BYD will behave in long-term use in European climate conditions.

But still. If we remove all these caveats, we are left with a simple conclusion: Sealion 08 is the most convincing proof that the Chinese auto industry is no longer what it was a decade agoThis is no longer a car that imitates the European premium segment – this is a car that redefines.

For many years, German and Japanese manufacturers have been able to indulge in lazy self-confidence, saying “Chinese cars are cheap because they are cheap.” After Sealion 08, it will be difficult to repeat that mantra. Not because it would be flawless, but because it is all-round good in a way, which until five years ago was considered reserved only for top European brands.

If you BYD Sealion 08 SUV never brings it to European roads, is this good news for your MercedesBut if it is brought – and given the BYD's current ambitions is this a question when and no or – European manufacturers will either have to lower prices or improve their products very, very quickly.

In any case: we, the customers, will be the winner. And that is precisely why the BYD Sealion 08 SUV 2026, regardless of its weaknesses, the most interesting car of 2026.
