The new Volkswagen ID. Polo: Wolfsburg remembered what it means to be a Volkswagen – although this could be better

After 51 years, we get a Polo who doesn't drink anything – except electricity.

Wolfsburg took the most recognizable name in its hangar - the Volkswagen ID. Polo, plugged it in and did exactly what it should have done five years ago.

Let's face it - it's been hard to be in love in recent years. Volkswagen. ID.3 It felt like it was designed by an algorithm that took a 2014 Gorenje refrigerator as a reference. The ID.4 was cute, but the interior had as many buttons as my grandmother's kitchen - nothing. And then there were the temperature sliders, which worked about as reliably in the dark as the weather forecast for Triglav. Something different is coming - Volkswagen ID. Polo.

Then it comes. ID. PoloAnd suddenly a thought comes to your mind that you haven't had in a long time: “Hey, that’s nice.”

A small car with a big history – Volkswagen ID. Polo

Before we go any further – a little context. Polo is not just another name from Wolfsburg. The Polo was the first car of countless students, the first car of countless retirees, the first car of many young families who could finally afford something reliable. The Polo was the car that our German teacher drove back in 1989, and that same Polo was still running when we graduated from high school in 2005. Since 1975, VW has sold more than 20 millionThis is not just a number – this is a generational destiny.

That's why the ID. Polo has a tough task. It's not enough to be good. It has to be PoloAnd here's the good news: VW has finally done its homework this time.

Design: vintage, no frills

The first thing you have to admit is that the car is beautifulNot in the sense of “beautiful for an electric car”, not “beautiful for the price”, but honestly, flawlessly, time-independently beautiful. This is the kind of beauty that a good Scandinavian chair has: in ten years it will still work like new. Chief designer Andreas Mindt called it “Pure Positive” design language, and although it sounds like the name for yogurt, the result is truly phenomenal. Volkswagen ID. Polo is a beautiful car.

The C-pillar is a slight nod to the first-generation Golf, the rear door handle is elegantly hidden à la Alfa Romeo, and the headlights are more German than the retro circus offered by the Renault 5. Vintage moments are just right – not too much to be cartoonish, not too little to be boring. It's like a good espresso: no sugar, no cream, just the essence.

Dimensions? Length 4,053 mm, width 1,816 mm, height 1,530 mm, and wheelbase 2,600 mm – that is, just under 13 cm shorter and 4 cm narrower than its rival Renault 5, which in European city garages means the difference between “light” and “hands-on”.

“Finally, Volkswagen is back,” as the brand's boss Thomas Schäfer himself said. And for once – I'm not lying – I believe him.

Interior: Buttons are back. Hallelujah.

Here comes the biggest one plot twist in 2026. Volkswagen is – trumpet, fanfarebrought back real physical buttons. Temperature slider? Dead. Sensitive buttons on the steering wheel? Buried. Switches for the four windows on the doors? All four, each to its own, as God commands.

It sits in the center console rotary knob for volume and radio, which can also be operated by the passenger and the driver – so that wonderful prelude to the fight for the radio station that we know from the eighties is still possible. Up front, the driver has a 10-inch digital dashboard and a 13-inch central screen, which – importantly – it is not fused with the armature, but stands as a tablet, allowing for easier future updates and corrections.

Bonus for nostalgics: “retro display” transforms the digital cockpit into the dashboard of a first-generation Golf. A classic tachometer, but instead of revs, a power meter. A geek-out moment that puts a smile on your face, even if you're not old enough to know what a carburetor even does.

Trunk It offers 441 litres – 25 percent more than the petrol Polo and more than the Golf. With the seats folded down, the space expands to 1,243 litersBonus: there's even a hidden compartment for charging cables under the floor. Practical.

Technical specifications: cheap battery, expensive battery and the GTI waiting

ID. Polo stands on a new platform MEB+ with front-wheel drive – which is a novelty for VW in the midst of the electric age, as all previous IDs were based on a rear-wheel drive philosophy.

Available at launch three powertrains:

  • 85 kW (114 HP / 116 PS) – basic version
  • 99 kW (133 HP / 135 PS) – medium version
  • 155 kW (208 HP / 211 PS) – the strongest

And two batteries:

  • 37 kWh LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) – range up to 329 km (204 miles) according to WLTP
  • 52 kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) – reach up to 454 km (282 miles) according to WLTP

Charging speed is where the first serious issue arises. “hmm” moment. The smaller battery only takes 90 kW DC, charging from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately 27 minutes. The larger one accepts 105 kW DC (some sources mention up to 130 kW), but this time is reduced to 24 minutesAll also have 11 kW AC charging as standard.

Honestly – we would expect at least 150 kW DC from the new electric platform in 2026. The Chinese are not resting, the BYD Dolphin Surf and a similar fish from Shanghai offer more competitive numbers. Wolfsburg will still have to work here., otherwise in three years the Polo will act like a good idea that stayed at home.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is standard – the car can be rented up to 3.6 kW, which means you can connect an e-bike, coffee machine, mini fridge or Bosch electric shears to it. Towing capacity? Up to 1,200 kg, depending on the version.

Weight: from 1,568 kg (small battery) to 1,576 kg (large battery) – which is a great discount for an electric car. The Renault 5 is more comfortable thanks to its multi-link rear suspension, but the Polo has a classic torsion beam with a different geometry, which is said to have been developed specifically for EVs. The front has a classic McPherson.

Acceleration 0–100 km/h and final speed They are not officially published for all versions, but for GTI version with 166 kW (223 hp / 226 PS), which is coming at the end of 2026 and will reach 100 km/h in about 7 seconds, we are talking about a true electric hot hatch with an electronically controlled differential VAQ.

Where the Polo still limps: 60 kWh would be the icing on the cake

We have to be honest here. 52 kWh is in theory enough for 454 km of range according to WLTP. In practice – when it's winter, the heating is on maximum, you're driving 130 km/h on the highway and you have a stroller, suitcase and dog in the trunk – we're talking about 300 km rangeAnd this is exactly the point where doubt lights up in your head: “Can this really be my only car?”

Ideal battery for ID. Polo would be 60 kWhNot because we want more numbers on paper, but because 60 kWh would provide reliable 480–500 km realistic reach and removed the last doubt about universal usability of the vehicle as the only car in the householdPolo has always been first car for many people – for retirees who switched from their Citroën AX to the Polo 30 years ago and have stayed there ever since; for young families; for singles who were looking for something reliable and reasonably affordable.

With 52 kWh, the ID. Polo is excellent second car or city car for a couple who has another car for tripsBut if VW wants the Polo to remain in the electric age first car of choice – that is, the car that an elderly couple parks in front of their apartment building and uses to visit their grandchildren in another country without panic – needs 60 kWh and at least 150 kW DC charging. Period.

Price: half truth, half marketing

Here comes a little marketing trick. VW advertises a starting price of 24,995 euros for the Trend version, which sounds great. Reality: the first series currently available for pre-order are the ID. Polo Life versions with a 52 kWh battery and a 155 kW drive, which cost 33,795 euros. The base model arrives in the summer, GTI and in early 2027.

Still sugar on top? VW rewarded the first 1,000 buyers with a 500 euro credit on the WeCharge charging network. Nice, but I won't pretend that this will change the world.

Conclusion: a good car, finally – but Wolfsburg, don't wave too soon

After many years of wondering about every new Volkswagen, "Who allowed this to go on the market?", I can honestly rate the ID. Polo as good car. Solid, beautiful, thoughtful, finally with buttons again, finally with a soul again that doesn't act like ChatGPT ran over it with a van. Macarol would say: “Sit 5.” Well, at least solid 4 with a big plus.

This is a car that will still looking good in ten years. Those vintage moments in the design – hidden hooks, a nod to the first Golf, a retro display – are just enough to add character, but not too much to be annoying. It's the difference between a good tattoo and one you want to remove in three months.

But – and that is big but – Wolfsburg is still not in the safe zone. Charging speed must be larger. Battery energy density must be better. The ideal battery configuration would be 60 kWh, not 52 – because the difference between “the second car” and “the only car” is precisely that last percentage of reach and trust. Price for the basic version It really needs to arrive before the end of 2027, otherwise the BYD Dolphin Surf, Hyundai Inster, Kia EV3 and half of the Chinese fleet that doesn't even exist in our minds yet will eat this segment like pancakes. The Chinese don't just rest - the Chinese eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, and work in between.

ID. Polo is therefore a sign that Volkswagen has not lost its way. That there is still someone in Wolfsburg who has a sense of what a car is. And what is most beautiful – that electricity is for Volkswagen easily accessible, beautiful and human. Not corporate. Not boring. Not arrogant.

Macarol Show rating: well, sit 5 – with the note that we expect more in charging, batteries and actual availability of the base model next year.

And another tip for Wolfsburg: when will you introduce the production version? ID. Every1, which is expected to be under 20,000 euros – please, revive the name oops! or Magnifying glassThe world is full of SUVs with annoying names. Sometimes a nostalgic coffee is enough.
