Research from Florida Atlantic University reveals that certain types of watches are full of bacteria that can cause infections. How can you protect yourself?
V the world of fashion, where a watch is more than just a time-telling device, it's important to know what you're wearing on your wrist. While shiny gold and silver watches reign supreme in the world of elegance, your plastic or rubber watch could surprise you with something less glamorous – bacteria.
Researchers with Florida Atlantic University have tested different types of watches and discovered that some types, especially those with rubber and plastic bands, are veritable havens for bacteria. And we're not talking about the friendly bacteria found in yogurt. We are talking about those that can cause infections, such as Staphylococcus, Enterobacteria (such as Escherichia coli) and Pseudomonas.
Why is this so? Biological scientist Nwadiuto Esiobu of Florida Atlantic University explains that plastic and rubber wristbands offer an ideal environment for bacteria to grow due to their porosity and static. These bacteria are not only the normal types found on the body, but also those that can cause serious diseases.
In a world where every detail matters, it's time to give your watch a little more attention. Not only for fashion, but also for your health.
