Viral Dance "Harlem Shake"

When artist Baauer released his song “Harlem Shake” on May 22, 2012, he didn't realize how popular it would become until the following year. Or rather, a smaller piece of the song. The so-called "meme" began with a clip from the YouTube channel FilthyFrankTV, which was the first to use its concept. So, in the first half of the video, the person, people or object is at peace, but at the very end, everything turns into an uncontrolled but very entertaining chaos.

Ice Bucket Challenge

Pouring cold water didn't start with exactly this challenge, but it has always had a charitable note. On a smaller scale, people poured themselves out in support of cancer patients, with some even donating the proceeds to pet charities. In 2014, however, a challenge got the attention of the whole world, in which people draw attention to patients suffering from the neurological disease ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) by pouring ice-cold water on it.

As part of the challenge, as much as 220 million dollars were collected in 2014 for research to cure this deadly disease. The story is all the more inspiring, because in 2016, with the help of donated money, scientists discovered a new, third gene responsible for the onset of the disease. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio (finally) wins an Oscar

Sometimes the performance of a movie actor or actress takes us so much that we really treat him/her to an Oscar. This was also the case with Leonardo DiCaprio, who strongly wanted the prestigious award himself. For several years in a row, he excelled in various roles, but towards the end he already accepted roles that could be disastrous for him in terms of health (such as the role in the movie Povratnik). His frolicking with a real bear and swimming in freezing cold rivers paid off. He won his first Oscar for Best Actor.

Exactly on April 1, 1997, we saw Ash Ketchum and his company for the first time in the animated series. We followed them on an exciting adventure in which they had to catch all the pokémon (which is an affectionate abbreviation for "pocket monster" or pocket menageries). That's exactly why all the fans of the series went crazy with excitement when the game developer Niantic announced that we will be able to hunt Pokémon ourselves. And that right in a nearby park, on the street, in the square, next to landmarks... It is one of the first games that drew millions of players out of their homes.

Fidget Spinner becomes the most desired children's toy

Fidget Spinner toy
Fidget Spinner toy

The spinning toy has been around since the 90s of the 20th century, but it experienced its explosion of popularity only in 2017. Many people "blame" the YouTube platform for its boom, as more and more people played with it on it. Since the toy was basically cheap, everyone could afford it. All of a sudden it could be bought everywhere. Every kid wanted at least one. But as quickly as the toy came, it went silent.

The most interesting thing is its origin, because it is not even known who its official inventor is. However, it is known to basically help in reducing stress, anxiety and certain neurological disorders, such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

Artist Banksy destroys his own painting in the middle of an auction

In addition to this year's glued banana, last year we were treated to another astonishing event in the world of art. Mysterious graffiti artist Banksy pulled the famous painting through a paper cutter in front of a remote control during an auction of his painting. He later showed the making of only this on his Instagram profile. The painting was sold for $1.4 million before it was destroyed. Banksy, who otherwise "posts" his works on actual walls, was very much against his art and its message being sold.

Later, despite the destruction, the painting gained even more value. It can be seen in its original carved form in the Staatsgalerie museum in Germany.

The first photo of a black hole

This year we were treated to a very special discovery. Black holes have been talked about a lot, but only in theory. So this photo finally confirmed their existence. Black holes are so massive that they absorb even light due to the gravity they produce, which is why it is impossible to see them with the naked eye. People somehow reacted to the discovery with a bunch of fun "meme" photomontages.
