What do our pets say about us?

According to many people, owners and pets are supposed to be quite similar. If you find this idea hair-raising, let's just mention that researchers have made some general theses that apply to pets and the personalities of their owners. So how much truth is there in the similarities and what do our pets say about us and our personalities?

1. Owners of fish are said to be the happiest. Dog owners are the most fun and cat owners are the most reliable and emotionally sensitive. Reptile owners are the most independent.

2. There are differences between people who have cats and people who have dogs. Dog owners are fifteen percent more extraverted, thirteen percent more agreeable, and eleven percent more conscientious than cat owners. People with cats are said to be twelve percent more neurotic and eleven percent more open than people with dogs.

3. After research, by Richard Wiseman, people often see their pets as a reflection of their personality. So, more often than not, a person's personality should reflect their pet's temperament.

4. A dog's breed is said to tell whether the owner is a liberal or a conservative. Liberals thus want dogs that are gentle and rely on their owners as equals. Conservatives, on the other hand, want their dogs to be primarily loyal and obedient.

5. People with pit bulls are potentially just as scary as their dogs. A study, conducted at the Leicester School of Psychology, found that younger people with inappropriate or aggressive behavior resort to aggressive dog breeds, confirming the wisdom that dogs match their owners' personalities.

6. Dog owners are healthy. They are supposed to refrain from everyday stress, be relaxed, have high self-esteem and be less likely to be diagnosed with depression. Dogs are thus more useful for health than cats. Further research has shown that some of these effects are pattern rather than correlational. Videos of cute animals also have some benefits in relieving stress - they reduce heart rate and blood pressure in less than a minute.

7. The researchers also found out the type of person who does not clean up after their dogs. Men with lower incomes and owners who let their dogs off the leash are less conscientious about cleaning up after their dogs, than women with higher incomes and those who do not let their dogs off the leash.

8. Some more interesting facts about pets:

  • Cats can manipulate us with the power of mind control.
  • People buy healthy food for their dogs more often than for ourselves.
  • Scientists have almost succeeded in turning foxes into lovable pets.
