Why do we celebrate Halloween?
The word Halloween comes from the words All Hallows Eve, which means eve of all saints. Its roots go back a long time in culture of the ancient Celts. With the Samhain holiday, they announced the end of summer and the beginning of winter. They thanked the gods for the harvested harvest and its storage through the winter. Namely, winters were uncertain at that time. Food ran out quickly, and for most people, winter presented many worries. That's why people are at that time quickly succumbed to demons and performed various rituals to gods and souls.
They also believed that on 31.10. the spirits return to the ground. Many people were frightened by this. They began to hide under various masks, light bonfires, place bowls of food, pumpkins and candles in front of the house, just to ward off evil spirits and sinful souls.
The ancient Romans also took over the holiday. After the spread of Christianity however, Pope Gregory IV moved it to a day later, that is, to the first of November. Later, the Church encouraged its believers to go from house to house on All Saints' Eve and beg for food in exchange for prayers for the dead.
