10 facts you didn't know about Black Friday

You've probably been living under a rock if you haven't heard of Black Friday, the biggest shopping day dedicated to spending, jostling and, as has always been the custom on American soil, fighting over products. So you already know three facts about this epic day, but believe me, there are many more. And some of them will leave you scratching your head.

Black Friday in modern times we only associate with shopping, but this day has its own history, the course of which has completely changed through modernity, or the content of this day has acquired a very different meaning.
In Slovenia, Black Friday is not a day recorded in our history, but in recent years it has been observed by merchants used to encourage consumerism. But the discounts offered by merchants on our soil cannot be compared to those in America.
Historical facts will prove to you that it is not just about shopping, but this day has different meanings that are still associated with consumerism.

1. Black Friday is an American holiday that is always the day after Thanksgiving. Since 1952, Thursday in the fourth week of November has been considered a shopping day in America, because that's when the Christmas shopping season begins. Since 2000, this day has been officially known as Black Friday.
2. Shopping malls are not the busiest on Black Friday. On the Saturday before the coming Christmas, the rush in the shops is even greater.
3. Black Friday was first heard of on September 24, 1869, when Jay Gould and James Fisk tried to sell the gold market on the New York Stock Exchange. The name Black Friday was first written in 1960 in Philadelphia newspapers and referred to the rush of people to shopping malls, the day after Thanksgiving.

4. You won't save the most on Black Friday:

  • the best deals on electronics are at the beginning of November
  • the best day to shop for toys is before black friday
  • discounts are greater on websites, especially if you are buying sports equipment or clothing
  • you will get the biggest discounts on products at the end of the shopping season

5. People wait in line for an average of two and a half hours at the cash register.

7. Black Friday is the busiest day for plumbers because they have to fix a water system that has been destroyed by 'shoppers'.

8. Black Friday used to be called Big Friday. The name comes from Philadelphia. The police were said to be so angry because the traffic on the road was congested, and the sellers did not like being associated with the smog and dirt caused by their customers, that in 1961 they tried to rename the day as the friendlier Big Friday, but the designation did not take effect.
9. Black Friday has spread to more than 15 countries around the world. Retailers were worried that consumers were buying overseas because of the discounts and were forced to bring them to their countries on the day.
10. There are supposed to be 12 % consumers drunk while shopping.
