Passion, restless gypsy blood and hot Spanish rhythms. All this is Carmen, the opera that made the French composer Georges Bizet go down in history forever as one of the greatest musical masters, and which will be on view at the Ljubljana Opera House from March 19.

Although it is Georges Bizet three months after the baptismal performance Carmen due to harsh criticism, he died in the belief that the opera was a failed work, today it is considered one of the most famous and popular. The opera in four acts was written by Bizet in 1875, and the libretto for it was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy, based on the literary proposal of Prosper Mérimée.

The story from the nineteenth century is timeless due to its subject matter and stirs spirits even today. He is talking about the kind of love that is always born in the moment in the form of unbridled passion, but brings in its wake jealousy and revenge, which inevitably lead to death and ruin. The seductive gypsy Carmen thus represents an unruly female nature that a man wants to subjugate, and the famous opera is not only an extremely realistic work, but a real folk drama with a tragic ending.
